Wheelchair accessible ramps should be considered across a whole journey, including arrival, approach, landings, doors and the destination beyond. Use current guidance with competent judgement

New construction, alterations and temporary equipment can have different requirements. Planning, listed-building, landlord or highway constraints may also apply. Do not copy a dimension from another property or treat a minimum figure as proof of usability. Document which guidance and approvals govern the work. Inclusive design combines those requirements with real wheelchair manoeuvres, door operation and assistance patterns, producing an arrangement that can be explained and reviewed rather than merely measured.

Provide usable landings and turning space

Landings are active areas for stopping, aligning, turning and operating doors. Measure their clear dimensions after rails, posts and door leaves are included. Direction changes belong on level space rather than the incline. A wheelchair user should not wait with rear wheels near an exposed edge while reaching for a handle or intercom. Consider the helper’s position and the movement of other people. Intermediate rest platforms may be needed according to the design. Mark proposed areas at full size before construction so conflicts with walls, gates, furniture or pedestrian flow become visible early.

Design gradients from measured rise

Take reliable levels over the full route, including crossfall and threshold lips. The total rise, suitable gradient and required landings determine the footprint. Shortening a ramp to fit an available strip can increase effort and reduce control. Where the run will not fit, assess a lift, regraded path, alternative entrance or revised building layout. Drainage and settlement must not change the effective slope unexpectedly. Present calculations and survey points in the design record. Good geometry supports predictable movement for both independent and assisted users without relying on exceptional strength or a one-off favourable trial.

Coordinate width, edges and handrails

Clear width is measured between the elements that actually restrict wheels, hands or helpers. Rails, kerbs, posts and fixings can reduce a nominal deck size. Edge protection and guarding address different risks and should be specified for the route’s height and surroundings. Handrails may assist ambulant users but must not obstruct wheelchair movement or door approaches. Review ends, gaps and changes at platforms. The design should contain wheels where required while preserving hand-rim clearance and a safe stance for assistance. Decorative boundaries cannot substitute for the protective measures identified by competent assessment.

Make entrances part of the access design

The ramp should meet a level door approach with enough room to pause, reach controls and move through the opening. Review handle height, closer force, timing, threshold profile and direction of swing. Automatic operation may be appropriate in some settings, subject to fire, security and maintenance requirements. Keep intercoms and access controls reachable from a stable position. Test arrival and departure separately. A ramp that technically reaches the sill still fails its purpose when the user cannot open the door, clear the leaf or wait safely while another person passes.

Select surfaces for predictable movement

Choose a finish that provides suitable grip, drainage and rolling quality in the intended environment. Very coarse texture can increase vibration and effort for small castors, while smooth contamination can reduce traction. Confirm permitted cleaning and winter treatment and avoid coatings that peel or conceal damage. External routes need falls and channels that move water away without creating ice at the foot. Internal routes should not introduce loose mats at transitions. Surface design works with sensible inspection and temporary closure decisions; no material makes leaves, spillages or severe weather irrelevant.

Include people with different access needs

An accessible route may serve wheelchair users, people with walking aids, parents with prams and those with visual or balance impairments. Consult likely users without assuming one person represents everyone. Provide clear circulation, appropriate visual definition and resting opportunities while avoiding clutter. Retain an alternative to steps where possible without making the ramp a segregated or hidden afterthought. Emergency arrangements should include disabled users and required assistance. Inclusive review can reveal conflicts that a purely wheelchair-based dimensional check misses, while the final design still needs to meet the specific chair and journey identified for the project.

Commission the complete installed route

Before opening, inspect foundations, supports, decks, joints, rails, guarding, landings, drainage, lighting and door operation. Compare final dimensions with the approved design. Conduct controlled trials with representative configured wheelchairs and agreed assistance, stopping after movement, grounding or unexpected effort. Record any correction and repeat affected checks. Handover should state operating limits, inspection frequency, fault contacts and an accessible alternative during closure. Commissioning demonstrates that the connected route performs as intended; the presence of a finished ramp alone is not evidence that every access task works.

Manage shared circulation

Consider peak pedestrian flow, queuing, deliveries and evacuation alongside wheelchair movement. Keep lower approaches out of traffic where possible and avoid positioning furniture or displays on landings. In communal housing, define how bins, bicycles and prams are kept clear. A route should not depend on staff moving obstacles after a user arrives. Review sight lines and passing places where space is restricted. Clear management rules preserve the dimensions established by the design and prevent an accessible ramp gradually becoming a storage edge or shortcut for unrelated activities.

Assign inspection and repair ownership

Name the person or organisation responsible for routine checks, cleaning, seasonal treatment and arranging repairs. Set intervals appropriate to materials, weather and use, with additional review after impact or flooding. Record loose fixings, settlement, surface damage and drainage blockage. State which findings close the route and how users are informed of an alternative. Contractors need the exact component and design information rather than permission to improvise. Clear ownership shortens fault response and stops small changes being accepted simply because responsibility is divided between building management, occupants and equipment providers.

Review communication and wayfinding

Users need to locate the route, understand where it leads and know how to request assistance if required. Signs should be concise, visible and consistent with the building’s wayfinding, without presenting the ramp as a service entrance unless that is genuinely the destination. Controls and help points need reachable positions and dependable response arrangements. Temporary closures should be communicated before arrival where practicable. Test the journey from normal arrival points. Accessible construction delivers more value when people can find and use it without unnecessary detours or uncertainty.

Reassess after building or user changes

Resurfacing, new doors, altered drainage and landscaping can change transitions or approach space. A different wheelchair or assistance pattern can expose clearance and effort issues not present at commissioning. Schedule review and invite user feedback rather than waiting for an incident. Modular alterations still require approved design and renewed checks. Preserve drawings, surveys and maintenance records so changes are compared with a reliable baseline. Wheelchair accessible ramps remain effective through active management, with their geometry and operating conditions reconsidered whenever the surrounding route or the people using it materially change.
