Measure the exact vehicle opening

Record sill height, clear opening width, usable interior height and the straight approach available behind or beside the vehicle. Include doors, bumpers, trim, tow bars and any lip that affects bearing. For a boot, measure the narrowest opening rather than the widest interior point. For an adapted vehicle, examine the deployed route and level boarding space. Repeat measurements with the vehicle parked on a suitable level surface. Document the wheelchair in transport configuration

Trial the operator's lift and deployment route. The best format is the one that can be positioned consistently without fingers near hinges, unstable balancing or guesswork about wheel alignment.

Plan the loading method before the first trip

For an empty manual chair, decide whether it will be pushed, winched or otherwise moved only as permitted by the equipment instructions. Do not stand downhill and pull a heavy chair toward the body. Powered wheelchairs need their specified driving or freewheel procedure and may require specialist loading equipment. Occupied boarding should follow the adapted vehicle provider's training and should never be improvised with unassessed portable equipment. Agree stop signals, helper positions and brake use on level ground. A written method prevents a hurried roadside situation from becoming the first attempt.

Secure ramp and wheelchair during travel

Once loading is complete, store or fold the ramp as directed and restrain it so it cannot move under braking or collision forces. Loose channels, pins and handles can become hazards. An empty wheelchair carried as luggage also needs appropriate restraint at approved points. Occupied wheelchair transport requires a suitable vehicle system and trained use of passenger restraints and tie-downs; parking brakes alone are not sufficient. Keep the ramp clear of batteries, controllers and upholstery that could be damaged. Loading success is only part of the journey: everything must remain controlled while the vehicle moves.

Prepare for weather and roadside conditions

Rain, grit, ice, wind and poor lighting affect grip and handling around a vehicle. Inspect the ground and ramp immediately before deployment. Make the user wait in a safe level place while setup is checked rather than on the carriageway or incline. Measure the storage route inside the car

Use the full mass crossing the ramp, including batteries and any person only where occupied use is explicitly assessed and permitted. Check whether channel pairs or extended sections carry a different rating. Capacity should exceed neither the ramp's written limit nor any vehicle adaptation limit. Wheel spacing, tyre width and concentrated motor weight can also affect compatibility. Do not infer capacity from the thickness of a deck. Keep the exact specification with the travel equipment so a substitute wheelchair is not loaded without reassessment.

Inspect after repeated transport

Vehicle movement can loosen catches, rub coatings and expose the ramp to impact from luggage. Before deployment, examine hinges, telescopic locks, lips, feet, straps and deck surfaces. Check that all pins and paired sections are present. Remove equipment from use after distortion, cracks, uncertain locks or damaged grip. Clean grit before collapsing sections so it does not score sliding surfaces. Record significant impacts and follow the repair route. Regular inspection matters even when the ramp spends more time stored than carrying a chair.

Complete a full journey rehearsal

Rehearse parking, unloading the ramp, deployment, wheelchair approach, crossing, stowage and final restraint in the correct order. Then repeat the return journey, when fatigue and space may differ. Use the actual operator, vehicle and wheelchair under suitable supervision. Time pressure should not be introduced as a test. Record clearances, handling limits and the locations that work.
