Removing these items for measurement can produce dimensions that look accurate on paper but do not represent the occupied chair.

Choose a level floor with enough room to move around both sides. Use a flexible tape for curved areas and a rigid rule where a straight clearance is important. Ask another person to help if a measurement would otherwise require leaning or twisting. Record each figure immediately, include the unit and note the exact start and end points. A bare number such as 72 is easy to misread later.

Separate chair dimensions from seated dimensions

Two sets of information are needed. Chair dimensions describe the structure: overall width, backrest height, seat depth and the distance to the front of the footplates. Seated dimensions describe the space occupied by the user: shoulder width, lap depth and the vertical distance from the top of the head to the feet. Keeping the sets separate makes it easier to understand why a cover may fit the frame but feel restrictive when occupied.

Wear the type of clothing likely to be used in wet weather during the seated check. A coat, scarf or layered jumper can add bulk, especially around the shoulders and neck. Sit in the normal posture rather than stretching upright for the tape. If posture varies during the day, record a comfortable range so the selected cover does not depend on one exact position.

Measure width at the points that can catch fabric

First measure the chair from its widest fixed point on one side to the equivalent point on the other. This may be across the rear wheels, armrests or another structural part. Then measure the seated user across the outer clothing at shoulder or elbow level, whichever is wider in the usual position. Finally, consider side-mounted items such as control units, guards or bags.

A cover needs enough room to fall around these points without being stretched tight. Excess width has consequences too: loose material may flap, bunch beside the seat or drift towards wheels. Compare the stated cover width with the actual shape shown in its measurements. A flat garment measurement may represent twice the width once opened, while another maker may provide the complete circumference. The diagram and measuring method matter as much as the number.

Trace the length from head to foot area

Overall length is often misunderstood because the cover does not hang in a straight vertical line. It travels over the head or shoulders, follows the lap and continues towards the feet. With the user seated, run a flexible tape along the route the material will take. Do not pull the tape taut across open space; let it follow the body's contours and the chair's position.

Note where the proposed lower edge should finish. It needs to cover the intended area while remaining safely away from castors, tyres and the ground. Chairs with elevated or extended leg rests create a different route from chairs with compact footplates. Measure both sides if the leg-rest positions differ. The longer path is usually the more useful comparison, provided the extra material will not hang into moving parts on the shorter side.

Check the back, handles and head support

Measure from the top of the backrest or head support to the point where rear coverage should end. If push handles project through openings, record the distance between them, their height and how far they extend. Openings in a cover must align without pulling the front section backwards. Covers without handle slots need a rear shape that can sit around the handles without leaving a large exposed gap.

A head support changes both height and contour. Include its highest and widest points, and check whether the hood is intended to sit on the user or over part of the support. These are different arrangements. Photographs in a listing can suggest the intended configuration, but only stated dimensions and a clear construction diagram allow a meaningful comparison.

A practical measurement record

Add a short note beside each entry. For example, write "outside edge of rear wheels" rather than simply "chair width". If someone else checks the figures, those descriptions let them repeat the same method and spot an obvious mistake.

Assess the hood and face opening

A hood should allow the head to rest naturally and the face opening to remain clear. Measure around the head over any hat or hooded coat likely to be worn underneath, but do not treat circumference as the only factor. Depth from the forehead to the back of the head affects whether the hood pulls backwards, while neck and shoulder shape influence how it settles.

Look at the adjustment method and where cords, toggles or hook-and-loop sections sit. The user should be able to see forward and to both sides as required for normal movement. Material should not press across the eyes or mouth. If the cover will be fitted by the wheelchair user, check whether each adjustment point can be reached from the seated position. A technically correct size offers little benefit if essential fastenings cannot be operated.

Allow working room for hands and controls

Fit is dynamic. On a powered chair, the control hand must reach the joystick and nearby buttons throughout its normal movement. Measure the space from shoulder to control with the arm relaxed, then observe where a front or side panel would cross that path. A clear panel may make the controls visible, but the hand still needs room to move without pulling the cover out of position.

For a self-propelled chair, consider the full push stroke. Sleeves or side openings may be more appropriate than a continuous panel for some users. Check where fabric could meet the push rims and whether the shoulders can move freely. If a companion usually pushes, handle access becomes central instead. The same chair can require a different cover shape depending on who propels it.

Interpret allowances with care

Do not add an arbitrary amount to every measurement. The necessary allowance depends on the fabric, seams, shape and fastening system. A structured cover may need its dimensions to match closely at key points, while a draped cape may use more overlap. Follow the maker's own measuring diagram and compare like with like.

Where dimensions sit near a size boundary, examine the consequence of going larger as well as smaller. A smaller option may pull at the shoulders or expose the knees. A larger option may create folds close to the wheels. Contact the manufacturer or retailer for clarification when the measurement method is ambiguous, describing the chair setup and the figures you recorded without assuming that a size name will resolve the issue.

Test the fit in a dry, controlled space

When the cover arrives, unfold it fully and identify the front, back and any handle or control openings. Fit it indoors with the chair stationary. Follow the supplied instructions and avoid making permanent alterations during the first trial. Check the hood, shoulders, lap, sides, foot area and rear in that order so a problem at one point is not hidden by pulling fabric from another.

Move the chair slowly through normal actions. Turn the front castors, operate the controls, make a few self-propelling strokes if relevant and ask a companion to use the handles. Watch the lower edges throughout. Sit for several minutes to see whether fabric gradually slides, tightens or gathers. The initial appearance can be neat even when ordinary movement reveals an unsuitable fit.

Signs that the dimensions need another look

One sign may be corrected by fitting the cover in the proper sequence, so consult the instructions and repeat the dry trial. If the same issue returns, compare the affected section with the recorded measurement. This identifies whether the problem is overall size, panel shape or incompatibility with a particular accessory.

Consider transfers and changes in position

A cover may fit while the user remains still yet become inconvenient during a transfer. Think about which section needs to open first, where wet fabric would be held and whether a helper can reach the relevant closure. If leg rests swing away or armrests lift, the cover should not prevent those parts from moving when access is needed.

Some users change leg angle, backrest recline or head-support position during an outing. Repeat the clearance check at the positions that are actually used. The material must stay away from moving chair components throughout the adjustment. Record any configuration in which the cover no longer sits correctly, as this may guide how and when it is used.

Recheck fit when the setup changes

Measurements are not permanent if the chair or its accessories change. A new cushion can raise the seated height. A replacement bag can increase rear depth. Different winter clothing can alter shoulder room, and repositioned footplates can change the path of the front panel. Revisit the relevant figures after any such change instead of assuming the previous fit remains suitable.

Keep the measurement record with the cover's instructions. If the cover later needs replacing, the notes provide a useful starting point and show which details caused difficulty. Measuring carefully, comparing construction diagrams and testing movement indoors gives a much clearer basis for choosing a raincover than relying on a general size description alone.
