Start with the doorway rather than a ramp length

A door ramp for wheelchair access must resolve the complete threshold area, not just cover the most visible lip. Measure the level on each side, the sill height, the door opening and the space available for a straight approach. Measure rise at several points

Thresholds are not always level across their width. Use a suitable straightedge and measure the rise near each wheel line as well as at the centre. Check whether the external paving falls away or the internal floor slopes toward the door. Note the depth of the sill and any rounded or flexible surface that cannot provide stable bearing. The ramp’s quoted height range should be compared with the real profile, including compression of loose mats. Accurate measurements help identify whether one piece, paired inside-and-outside wedges or a broader doorway alteration deserves assessment.

Keep enough clear width

Measure the narrowest usable opening with the door in its normal operating position. Handles, closers, projecting hinges and ramp edges can reduce space that looked available when the doorway was empty. Compare the remaining width with the wheelchair as configured, allowing for hand rims, controller, elbows and bags. A user should not need to twist hands or scrape upholstery to pass through. If a ramp has side kerbs, use the distance between them rather than its overall width. Wider equipment cannot compensate for a door opening that remains too narrow.

Consider small castors and ground clearance

Small front wheels encounter the lower edge first and can stop sharply at a gap that larger rear wheels cross. Check the proposed lower transition, ramp surface, upper lip and any joint between paired pieces. Footplates, anti-tip bars and battery boxes may ground as the chair changes angle. Measure these parts with the user’s normal seating position and load. A demonstration with an empty wheelchair may sit higher and behave differently. Choose geometry that supports the configured chair, and follow the chair maker’s limits for slopes and obstacles rather than relying on the ramp description alone.

Allow level room to operate the door

Opening a door from a wheelchair requires space for reaching the handle, moving clear of the swing and realigning with the entrance. That activity should take place on a level surface. An outward-opening leaf can conflict with a ramp placed too close to the sill; an inward-opening leaf may still pull the user forward while the chair is on the approach. Check closers, locks, intercoms and gates as part of the same task. If the landing cannot support safe door operation, consider automation, rehanging or another entrance with professional advice instead of accepting a cramped manoeuvre.

Choose a form suited to the threshold

Solid wedges, bridge plates, channel-style pieces and adjustable threshold ramps solve different profiles. A single-sided wedge approaches one raised edge, while a door track or raised sill may require carefully matched pieces on both sides. Some equipment needs a flat vertical face for contact; other designs span a narrow obstruction. Confirm the permitted use, bearing requirement and fixing method for the exact item. Do not cut, stack or reverse a ramp unless its instructions expressly allow that configuration. A neat fit should also avoid pressure on fragile uPVC trim or drainage channels.

Check stability without damaging the frame

Portable threshold ramps still need to resist sliding, rocking and sideways movement. Examine the intended contact surfaces and whether locating pins, fixings or high-friction feet are specified. Adhesive or screws may affect damp proofing, door warranties or rented-property permissions. Loose packing is not a stable adjustment. If the ramp bridges a track, ensure load is transferred to suitable areas rather than plastic covers. Ask who will confirm the substrate and fitting method. Stability should come from the designed arrangement, not from wedging the door or asking a helper to hold the ramp in place.

Manage rain and drainage

External doorways are designed to shed water, and an added ramp can interrupt that path. Identify weep holes, channels and the direction of fall before choosing equipment. The upper contact should not force water beneath the door or trap debris against timber and seals. Surfaces need grip when tyres are wet, while openings must remain suitable for small castors and walking aids. Establish a cleaning routine that keeps drainage clear. During frost, heavy rain or leaf fall, inspect the approach before each journey and use an accessible alternative when the threshold cannot be kept safe.

Plan portable handling and storage

If the ramp is removed after use, check its mass, grip points and shape. The helper needs somewhere close to store it without blocking the doorway, damaging walls or carrying dirt through living areas. A piece left outside may move, corrode or become a trip hazard. Agree who positions it, how correct alignment is recognised and where the wheelchair waits during setup. Repeated bending may be unsuitable for some carers even when the ramp seems light. A permanently fitted solution may offer greater consistency where the doorway is crossed many times each day.

Review shared and emergency access

A doorway may serve pedestrians, deliveries and emergency escape as well as the wheelchair user. Check that ramp edges do not create an unexpected trip point and that removable equipment is not left across a circulation route. Fire doors, self-closing action and smoke seals must continue to perform as intended. In communal buildings, obtain approval from the responsible person and clarify who inspects the arrangement. An accessible everyday entrance should not introduce a hazard for neighbours or depend on a component that disappears when another resident tidies the hall.

Ask focused questions before purchase

Provide the supplier with the maximum and minimum rise, sill depth, clear opening, approach surfaces and wheelchair measurements. Ask for usable width, supported height range, load, edge detail, environmental limits and the exact anti-slip and fixing arrangements. Clarify whether the stated dimensions include flanges or kerbs. If two pieces are proposed, request confirmation that they are intended to work together at that profile. Written answers make similar-looking products easier to compare and reveal when the doorway needs an assessed alteration rather than another accessory.

Trial the complete journey calmly

Set up the approved arrangement and inspect contact, alignment and clear width before the user approaches. Practise communication with a helper, then cross at controlled speed in each direction as permitted by the wheelchair guidance. Notice castor response, footplate clearance, door reach and room to stop. Do not use momentum to overcome a catch. If the ramp moves, the chair grounds or the user feels unstable, return to level space and reassess. The trial should include normal footwear, usual chair fittings and realistic door operation, not an empty corridor prepared only for demonstration.

Keep doorway checks part of daily use

Threshold equipment can shift when doors slam, furniture is moved or paving settles. Before use, remove grit, confirm the ramp is seated and check that drainage and the door path are clear. Inspect wear, cracking, loose fixings and damaged grip at the interval stated by the maker. Record recurring movement because it may indicate that the form or fitting method is wrong for the site. A door ramp remains effective only while the doorway, wheelchair and user routine match the conditions used when the arrangement was chosen.
