Compare usable width, transition shape, raised edges, folded size, handles and the weight of the heaviest piece. Ask the regular handler to demonstrate deployment and recovery. Small front wheels can catch on an abrupt lower lip or gap, while footplates, batteries and anti-tip bars can ground at a change of angle. Inspect the complete path over the lower transition, deck and upper lip. Verify the maker’s compatibility information for the chair and ramp rather than assuming a wide deck solves every clearance issue. An unoccupied chair check can reveal obvious contact, but it does not prove an occupied crossing is appropriate. Stop an assessed trial immediately if a castor turns sideways, an attachment touches or the user reports instability.
Open the door to its normal maximum and measure the remaining landing. Include the handle, closer, mat well and any lip beyond the step. Decide who unlocks and holds the door and where that person stands. The wheelchair user should not have to pause on a slope while somebody reaches across the chair. Ask the user what help they want and respect a request to stop. Establish hand positions, a clear stop word and the role of each helper before approaching the ramp. Learn the chair’s brakes, controls and free-wheel settings on level ground. Ascending and descending may need different techniques, so obtain appropriate instruction rather than copying a casual demonstration. Nobody should stand directly downhill from a moving chair or push without warning. If alignment is lost, return to level ground under the agreed method and investigate the cause instead of applying more force.
Look for bent edges, cracks, worn grip, contamination, loose fasteners, damaged hinges and incomplete locks. Confirm that labels remain legible and every detachable part is present. Clean and lubricate only as directed by the manufacturer. After a drop, vehicle impact or unexplained movement, isolate the ramp until it has been properly inspected. Tape, rope and substitute bolts are not dependable repairs for access equipment. Wind can affect a light ramp during placement even when it is stable once loaded. Assess conditions again before the return trip rather than relying on the morning check. Provide a dependable alternative if the route must close. Tell everyone who may assist how that decision is made, so the user is not pressured to cross an arrangement outside its permitted condition because an appointment has ended.
Repeat measurements when a wheelchair, cushion, foot support or carried accessory changes. Reassess after resurfacing, replacement doors, altered thresholds or movement of nearby furniture. A new assistant may also need training even if the hardware is unchanged. Record any grounding, sliding or loss-of-confidence event and resolve it before reopening the route. If the step is crossed frequently, compare the temporary setup with a professionally planned permanent adaptation. Regular review keeps the decision tied to the current user and environment rather than to a ramp that happened to work once.
Ask for the exact usable width, maximum permitted rise, load limit, top overlap, securing method and folded weight of the model being considered. Clarify whether occupied wheelchair use is allowed and what inspection schedule applies. Give the supplier the measured site and chair details, including the smallest wheels and low fittings. Establish who can advise on the proposed gradient and whether permission is needed from a landlord or building manager. Written answers make competing step ramps easier to compare and expose uncertainty before equipment arrives at a doorway where access is already important.
