Treat it as an installation that requires the supplier's design, competent assembly and documented inspection. Check the substrate supporting each foot and protect buried services or waterproof surfaces. Component labels should match the plan, with no substituted fasteners. Agree who may alter or relocate it. A modular route left in place can reduce daily lifting, yet it also changes circulation around the building and may need permissions or protective barriers.

Keep the original stairs safe for other people

A new access route must not create trip edges, narrow the remaining stair below an acceptable width or conceal handrails needed by pedestrians. Children, visitors and delivery workers may encounter the structure unexpectedly. Provide appropriate lighting, contrast and managed separation without relying on improvised signs. Check how doors and gates operate beside the installation. In communal premises, coordinate with the responsible person and fire plan. Solving wheelchair entry cannot leave other occupants with an unsafe or confusing route through the same space.

Plan for evacuation and loss of the usual route

Discuss emergency arrangements before installation. A temporary system may be unavailable during fire, flooding, power loss or building work, and a lift may not form part of the evacuation method. Identify who assists, where refuge or alternative exits are located and how current occupants receive the plan. Never block an escape route with folded sections or storage. The wheelchair user should know whom to contact if the route is damaged or locked. Review the plan with the property manager rather than assuming ordinary arrival arrangements cover emergencies.

Request the mass and size of components only after the route design is understood. A detailed answer should refer to the site survey rather than offer a standard length from the number of stairs. Resolve every unclear boundary before arranging delivery.

Use a staircase decision record

Keep the measured plan, alternatives considered, chosen route, responsible people and review date together. Note why a simpler portable ramp was rejected if its gradient or landing space was unsuitable. Record user feedback and any access interruption without unnecessary personal detail. This evidence helps a landlord, family or employer understand the decision when staff change or the temporary period extends. It also prevents a later helper from recreating a discarded unsafe shortcut. Update the record whenever the flight, surrounding doors, ground or mobility equipment changes.
