Measure the vertical rise to the upper floor and the clear run available without blocking a doorway or extending into a traffic route. Relate those figures to the chair manufacturer's guidance and the ramp maker's stated application. Include the transition at the top, the lower feet and the place where the operator stops. A short route can create a demanding incline; a long route can occupy a landing or pavement. Do not solve a shortfall with boxes, loose boards or improvised blocks.
Identify the bearing points for the lower feet, upper lip, brackets, pins, straps and any intermediate supports. Ask whether the stair nosings and landing surfaces can carry the proposed load without movement. Watch for rocking when the ramp is empty, then consider the forces created as each wheel crosses a join. A mat may protect a finish, but it cannot replace a missing support. Any fixing or structural alteration should be assessed by a suitably competent person before use.
Raised edges help keep wheels on a deck, while handrails may support a user or operator when the site and method call for them. Check that rails, guards and wall clearances do not reduce the usable width. A person reaching the top needs a safe place to turn without striking a wall or open door. Handrails also need secure fixing and an appropriate position. They are part of the route design, not a decorative addition that can be fitted after the ramp has been selected.
Record the wheelchair's width, length, wheelbase, ground clearance and complete mass in the exact form that crosses the ramp. Include cushion, battery, foot supports, headrest, tray, controller and bags. Note whether it is pushed, driven, dismantled or controlled by an attendant. If sections are removed, record each mass and approved lifting point. A ramp's stated width has little meaning when the chair's widest projection is a joystick, foot support or anti-tip wheel outside the frame.
Learn the chair's parking brake, power-off and free-wheel instructions on level ground. Agree who steers, who places the ramp, who calls a stop and who manages a door. The operator needs to see the wheels, edges and top landing. Never put a helper below a moving chair or between it and a wall. Stop for sideways drift, a wheel leaving its track, a support shifting or any movement that demands a hurried correction. A second person cannot make an unsuitable method safe by strength alone.
Stair treads and landings may be timber, paint, concrete or tile, each with different grip and drainage. Note grit, moss, wet leaves, ice, standing water and crossfall at the entrance. Follow the ramp instructions for the site and weather. A textured surface does not cure an unstable foot or a slippery landing. Decide how the route will be cleared before setup and what alternative is used if conditions change. Keep the operator's walking line free of bags, mats and loose sections.

A system that can be deployed only by an occasional helper may fail on the journey home, so storage and recovery belong in the original decision.
Before each trial, check risers, nosings, landings, rails and fixings for movement or damage. Examine the ramp surface, hinges, joints, locks, end plates, feet, straps, rails and edge guards. Stop if one panel bows, a fastening pin refuses to seat or a foot begins to wander. Used equipment needs its model, instructions and fitting history. If the ramp has been altered for another staircase, obtain a competent assessment instead of assuming the new route has the same bearing.
Use the exact wheelchair and the real stair route in a controlled demonstration, following the documented sequence. Start without an occupant where that is the stated method. Test alignment, stopping, landing turns, door handling and dismantling. Descent requires its own trial because gravity changes braking and the operator's stance. Record the stop command, number of helpers and awkward reaches. The route is ready for consideration only when setup, travel and recovery remain controlled without improvised support.
