Define the job for a ramp kit

Wheelchair ramp kits can range from a small threshold solution to a longer arrangement with sections, supports and handrails. Begin with the obstacle: name its rise, width, surfaces and the route beyond it. Decide whether the kit will be brought out for occasional access, left in place for a period, or installed as part of a permanent change. A kit is useful when its individual pieces, the site and the wheelchair form one understood system.

List every component before comparing

Write down the deck or tracks, joins, feet, lips, pins, straps, supports, platforms, edge guards and any rails included in the kit. Check which pieces are essential to the stated setup and which are optional accessories. Count the sections and note their labels. A lower package description may omit a support or landing needed at the real doorway. Keep the component list with the measurements so a later quote can be checked against the arrangement that was assessed.

Survey the entrance properly

Measure the clear doorway, threshold height, depth of the landing and the room available for the chair to turn after crossing. Include a door closer, mat, step nosing, drain, wall, railing, bin or furniture that cannot move. Measure the approach in both directions if the entrance is used for leaving as well as arriving. A ramp can have the right length yet fail because its upper end leaves no place to stop before the door.

Separate threshold work from a long rise

A low threshold may need a short wedge or bridge with firm bearing at both ends. Several steps require a longer design, intermediate landings or an installed structure considered by a competent person. Do not combine small portable parts across a staircase merely because their lengths add up. Ask the supplier which rise and application the kit is intended to address. Treat a staircase, sloping path and doorstep as separate design problems until the measurements show otherwise.

Choose a portable or fitted arrangement

Portable sections can be useful when an entrance serves different people or must remain clear, but they need storage, deployment space and a repeatable placement method. A fitted system may reduce daily handling while introducing fixing, building and permission questions. Compare the time and strength available to the person who sets up the route. Decide who checks the supports and who removes the kit. The lightest section does not settle whether the complete arrangement is practical.

Compare deck and track layouts

A continuous deck supports front castors and rear wheels across one surface. Twin tracks reduce the area to carry but demand accurate alignment and compatible wheel spacing. Compare usable width, raised edges, surface grip, joins, flex, packed size and the way each piece is lifted. Include the chair's widest projection, foot supports and any attendant's foot route. A track kit must leave the operator enough room to stand without balancing on a narrow edge beside the chair.

Calculate the rise, run and transition

Measure from the lower bearing surface to the upper floor, then identify the run available without blocking a road, path or door. Check the maker's guidance for the loaded chair and the intended direction. At the top, allow for the change in angle and any low footplate or castor. At the bottom, allow the feet to sit beyond a raised kerb or uneven paving. Do not improve a short kit by placing it on loose blocks or household furniture.

Understand supports and joining points

Each join should close, lock and bear in the way the instructions describe. Identify where feet, pins, straps and brackets sit, and check whether a platform is required between sections. The ground and doorway must support the forces placed on the kit. Look for rocking when the deck is empty, then reassess when the chair reaches a joint. If a threshold, tread or landing is damaged, resolve the structure before using the ramp. A mat may protect a surface, but it cannot replace a missing support.

Plan edge protection and rails

Raised edges can help keep wheels on a deck, while handrails may offer a useful grip where the building and user require them. Check that guards and rails do not reduce the clear width or obstruct a door. On steps, decide how a person reaches the top landing without turning into a wall or open door. Rails need sound fixing and a suitable height for the intended user. Treat them as part of the access design rather than an attractive extra added after the ramp has been chosen.

Match the kit to the wheelchair

Record the wheelchair's width, length, wheelbase, ground clearance and complete mass in the form that crosses the ramp. Include battery, cushion, foot supports, headrest, tray and bags. If the chair is folded or separated, list each piece and its lifting points. Ask whether the chair is pushed, driven or controlled by an attendant. Occupied access needs a complete suitable plan; a kit intended for empty equipment does not establish passenger safety.

Make assembly and storage realistic

Rehearse carrying every section from its storage place to the entrance, laying it out in order, fitting locks and returning the pieces afterwards. Measure the packed bundle through cupboards and doors. Label sections if the sequence matters and keep pins and instructions together. Decide where a wet or dirty surface will dry without blocking an exit. If two people are needed, name the second helper and consider whether that support is available for every planned use, including an unexpected return trip.

Check surfaces and drainage

Note paving joints, loose gravel, timber, paint, moss, wet leaves, ice and crossfall at the site. Water can collect at a threshold or change the grip of a deck. Follow the kit's instructions for surface and weather conditions, and clear the route before deployment. A textured surface cannot make an unstable lower foot safe. Identify an alternative entrance or postponement plan for poor conditions. Keep the walking line free from the kit's edges, bags and removed mats.

Inspect pieces before each setup

Examine decks, tracks, hinges, joins, fasteners, feet, lips, straps, rails and brackets. Stop for a crack, bend, loose connection, missing part, unusual flex or a lock that will not engage. Check the entrance as well, because a damaged threshold can shift a sound ramp. Ask for the model and fitting history when buying a used kit. Replace components only with compatible parts. A quick glance is not enough after a drop, an overload or a change to the support arrangement.

Trial the whole movement

Use the exact wheelchair and the real entrance with the intended helper. Practise carrying, assembly, upper and lower contact, approach, stopping, the door movement and disassembly. Test descent as well as ascent, since braking and body position change in that direction. Keep the user out of the route unless the complete occupied method has been assessed for that purpose. Agree a clear stop command. Record any wheel drift, scraping, awkward reach or need for a second person before choosing the kit.

Compare alternatives before ordering

A threshold wedge, a different entrance, a permanent ramp, a platform lift or another transfer arrangement may solve the measured problem with less repeated handling. Compare the complete routine, storage, installation, weather exposure and assistance requirements. Keep clinical, structural and building questions with the appropriate professional. A kit should not be selected just because its sections are easy to carry. It should leave the chair, user and helper with a controlled path and a workable way to recover the equipment.

Keep an evidence sheet for the purchase

Record the obstacle measurements, clear width, required run, chair configuration, complete mass, component list, support points, packed dimensions, storage place, installation questions and the result of the full trial. Mark assumptions that still need an answer. Check that the delivered sections, pins, rails and instructions match the agreed arrangement before regular use. Revisit the sheet after changing the wheelchair, doorway, helper, accessory or usual parking place. That habit keeps a ramp kit tied to the route it was chosen to serve.

Can any ramp kit cover several steps?

Do not assume so. Match total rise, run, landings, supports, edge protection and the operator's method to a kit designed for that application.

Are tracks easier than a full deck?

They may reduce carrying bulk, but wheel spacing, alignment, clear width and the helper's standing position remain essential.

Should a kit include handrails?

Assess the user's route and site needs. Rails must be compatible, securely supported and positioned without reducing the required clear width.
