Decide what the vehicle ramp must do

A wheelchair ramp for a vehicle should be chosen around a particular car, van or SUV and a particular transport routine. Start by saying whether the chair is folded, separated or pushed into the vehicle, and who will handle it. Note the usual journey, the place where loading happens and whether the ramp is taken out again at the destination. This prevents a general vehicle label from hiding the measurements, effort and storage space that decide whether the arrangement will be usable.

Keep occupied travel as a separate question

Many vehicle ramps are intended to move an unoccupied wheelchair or mobility aid into a boot or cargo area. That purpose does not establish a safe method for a passenger to remain seated. If occupied travel is being considered, ask a suitable vehicle or mobility specialist about the full chair, anchorage and passenger-restraint arrangement. Record the answer separately from the loading plan. A smooth empty-chair demonstration cannot be used as evidence for seated access.

Describe the vehicle in loading form

Measure the vehicle with its seats, parcel shelf, hoist, luggage and protective trim in the positions used on an ordinary trip. Record the door opening, sill or boot floor height, depth to the first obstruction and headroom above the route. Include the wheel arches, hinges, hatch struts and sliding-door hardware. If seats fold or detach, write down the exact arrangement used for transport. A generous cargo volume does not necessarily provide a clear line for a wheelchair.

Measure the approach outside

A ramp needs a lower landing as well as an upper contact. Measure the available run behind or beside the vehicle and the width available for the handler's feet. Note kerbs, crossfall, nearby walls, parked cars and the path a door takes when opened. Include the place where the ramp will be stored while loading. An approach that works in an empty driveway may leave no safe standing space at an appointment or on a crowded street.

Record the wheelchair as transported

Use the chair's transport configuration for every comparison. List overall width, length, height, wheelbase, ground clearance and complete mass with battery, cushion, foot supports, headrest, tray, controller and bags attached. If sections are removed under the manufacturer's instructions, record each section's mass and approved lifting point. The widest projection may be a joystick or anti-tip wheel rather than the frame. Keep the measurements beside the ramp notes so a change in chair cannot be missed.

Choose the loading direction

A chair may enter nose first, rear wheels first or as separate parts, depending on the vehicle and its instructions. Consider the top transition, the turning movement and the position of the handler after the first wheels cross the sill. Check whether a tiller, footrest or push handle can catch on trim. Draw the chosen direction and the final parking position inside the vehicle. This simple sketch often reveals that a ramp needs a different width or a longer clear landing.

Compare a deck with two tracks

A broad deck gives all wheels one continuous surface and can make small corrections easier. Separate tracks may pack into a smaller bundle, but each wheel must follow its own line and the spacing must suit the chair. Compare usable width, edge protection, surface grip, flex, packed thickness, carrying points and the effort of deploying both pieces. Put the ramp beside the chair and vehicle before relying on a product name. A narrow channel can make a good-looking kit impractical.

Relate length to the actual rise

Measure from the ground where the feet will sit to the precise loading surface. Compare the rise and usable run with the ramp maker's guidance and the chair maker's permitted approach. A short section can create a demanding incline, while an unnecessarily long section may occupy a pavement or road. Allow space for the lower feet, top lip and the operator to remain behind the chair. An empty ramp test does not show the effort of the loaded equipment.

Check the two contact points

Find out whether the upper end bears on a sill, bumper, floor edge, hook, bracket or supplied support. The vehicle's trim should not carry a load for which it was not intended. Fit straps, pins, mats and lips exactly as directed, then watch for movement while the ramp is empty. Check that a hatch cannot press on it and that the lower feet remain firm. Do not use loose boards, a luggage edge or an improvised wedge to bridge a gap.

Plan control and stopping

The person guiding the chair needs to see both wheels, the ramp edges and the landing. Practise the chair's parking brake, power-off and free-wheel instructions on level ground before approaching the incline. Agree a stop command and decide where a second helper stands. Nobody should be trapped between a moving chair and the vehicle. Stop for wheel drift, scraping, a shifting support or any correction that would require reaching across the moving equipment. Calm control matters more than a quick loading time.

Make the interior ready

Clear only the items that the vehicle and chair instructions permit. Protect the controller, cushion, head support and folding catches from contact with the seat backs or hatch. Measure the gap between wheel arches and the height below the closed door. Mark where the chair will finish so it does not block a passenger or prevent the door from closing. If batteries, baskets or foot supports travel separately, give each one a protected place before the ramp is deployed.

Secure chair and ramp after loading

Use the approved vehicle points or installed storage system for an unoccupied chair, and restrain the ramp so it cannot move during braking. Keep detached parts away from passengers, pedals and controls. A strap around a frame is not an occupied wheelchair tie-down and passenger-restraint system. Check that the steering column, joystick and wheels cannot be crushed by luggage. Before leaving, confirm that the doors close without pressure and that the ramp can be recovered without unloading half the vehicle.

Include carrying in the comparison

Compare packed length, width, thickness, handle shape and the heaviest section with the route from storage to the vehicle. Rehearse removing the ramp, opening it, placing its upper and lower ends, then folding it away. Add chair preparation and restraint to the trial. A ramp may be easy to carry but awkward to position, or manageable once but tiring on every return journey. Choose a routine the regular handler can repeat with a secure grip and a clear view.

Allow for real parking conditions

Firm, level ground helps, but ordinary journeys may involve a cambered road, gravel, wet leaves, mud, standing water or limited lighting. Identify a safe bay with room for the full run and a walking line beside it. Keep doors, footpaths and moving traffic in mind. Decide what happens when the planned bay is occupied. Warning lights and an extra helper cannot compensate for feet resting on an unstable or sloping surface.

Inspect before relying on the kit

Look over the surface, rails, hinges, locks, lips, feet, straps and brackets before repeated use. Stop for a crack, bent edge, missing cap, loose fastener or new movement. Inspect the vehicle contact area for damage as well. For a used ramp, ask for its model, age, instructions and previous fitting arrangement. A replacement pin or section must match the system. If the ramp has been dropped, altered or overloaded, arrange a competent assessment before the next journey.

Run an end-to-end demonstration

Use the exact chair and a vehicle with matching geometry. Practise parking, opening, deployment, contact, ascent, stopping, loading, restraint, door closure and recovery. Repeat unloading because the handler's stance and braking change on the way down. Let the regular helper complete the sequence while another person observes the blind spots. Record every step needing assistance and every condition that changes the decision. A vehicle ramp earns a place in the routine when the complete method remains controlled and repeatable.

Does a vehicle ramp suit every wheelchair?

No. Check clear width, wheel spacing, mass, ground clearance, transport configuration, vehicle opening and the handler's ability for the exact chair.

Can a boot ramp carry a seated passenger?

Do not assume so. Obtain specialist guidance for occupied travel, anchorage, passenger restraint and the vehicle's approved arrangement.

Why measure outside the vehicle?

The ramp needs a stable lower landing, a safe operator position, deployment room and a clear route around doors, kerbs and traffic.

When should the ramp be inspected?

Inspect before use and after impact, overloading, alteration, unusual flex, damaged contact or a change in chair or vehicle.
