Define who travels, the exact wheelchair, the vehicle and the normal operator before comparing ramp styles. Record whether entry is through rear or side doors, whether the user transfers to a vehicle seat and how the wheelchair is secured. These decisions affect every later measurement.

Identify the exact van configuration

Model name alone is insufficient because wheelbase, roof height, door layout, floor conversion and suspension can differ. Record the van make, model, year, variant and any lowered-floor or access conversion. Measure the clear opening after trim, seals, hinges and latches. Note the usable interior height along the complete path to the travel position.

Conversions should be checked through their documentation and an appropriate specialist. An altered floor or rear suspension may change the loading height, support points and permitted equipment. Do not copy measurements from another vehicle that merely looks similar.

Measure the rise under normal loading conditions

Set the van on a stable horizontal area, then take the vertical dimension between the ground and completed entry floor. Use the vehicle condition expected during boarding, considering suspension response and carried load. Side and rear entrances may have different heights. A kerb can change the effective rise, but access should not depend on finding one unless the whole procedure has been assessed for that setting.

The measured rise and permitted gradient determine the required deployed length. Follow the limits stated for the wheelchair, vehicle conversion and ramp, using the most restrictive instruction. A shorter ramp saves storage room yet can create an incline that exceeds safe control or clearance.

Allow a complete deployment zone

Measure beyond the open doors to include the full ramp, a straight approach for the wheelchair and working room for the operator. Rear deployment can project into traffic or another parking bay. Side access can be blocked by closely parked vehicles, posts or narrow pavements. Plan where the van can stop without placing the user in a live carriageway.

Door travel also matters. Hinged rear doors and sliding side doors must remain secured in their intended position without intruding into the operating route. Wind can move an unsecured door suddenly. Confirm the specified procedure before boarding begins.

Check the transition at the vehicle floor

The upper edge must meet an approved structural support rather than flexible bumper trim or a cosmetic sill. Examine the ramp lip, locating pins or conversion-specific attachments and follow their instructions. Weight transfer should not lift, slide or twist the equipment. An improvised packing block cannot create a dependable connection.

Compare fixed, folding and removable systems

A fixed folding ramp remains attached to the van and can offer repeatable alignment. It occupies interior space and may affect rearward visibility or door access. A removable platform can leave the opening clear after use but requires lifting, storage and accurate positioning every time. Multi-section designs reduce packed length while adding hinges and locks that need inspection.

Consider the number of daily deployments and the abilities of the usual helper. A design that feels manageable once may become tiring during several journeys. Trial the complete opening, securing, folding and stowing sequence with the real vehicle.

Know when a powered lift may be more suitable

A ramp is not the only boarding option. A long rise, limited deployment space or difficulty controlling the wheelchair on an incline may justify assessment of a powered lift or another conversion. Lifts introduce their own capacity, platform, guard, maintenance and emergency-operation requirements.

Compare the complete travel routine rather than choosing solely on installation price. The passenger's posture, operator skill, parking locations and vehicle payload all influence the decision. Obtain specialist guidance for an occupied mobility conversion.

Calculate the real boarding load

For occupied entry, include the wheelchair user, chair, cushion, batteries, supports and items carried on the frame. For unoccupied loading, count everything that remains attached. Compare the total with the ramp's stated capacity and any vehicle-conversion limits. Determine whether a channel rating applies to each rail or the paired system.

A capacity figure does not prove compatibility. Width, wheel positions, upper support, gradient and structural integration remain separate requirements. Never test an uncertain rating by gradually adding load.

Match clear width to the wheelchair

Measure the chair across its widest operating components, including hand rims, wheel hubs and accessories. A platform needs sufficient usable width between edge guards. Channel ramps require correct tyre width, wheel track and alignment for front castors, main wheels and anti-tip devices. A three-wheel scooter may follow a pattern that paired channels cannot support.

Allow a steering margin without making the route so broad that guides provide no useful protection. The occupant's hands and elbows also need clearance from door pillars. Test dimensions in both upright and any permitted travel configuration.

Review traction and weather performance

Van ramps are exposed to rain, road grit, mud and sometimes ice. Examine the specified running surface and its cleaning method. Drainage should prevent water collecting at the lower edge or inside the vehicle. Wet tyres can transfer contamination onto a previously dry surface.

Inspect tread condition before each use. Worn coatings, loose mesh, bent edges or contaminated channels can reduce control. Store removable sections dry and secure them so travel vibration cannot damage their surface or locks.

Plan powered-wheelchair boarding

Consult the wheelchair manual for permitted gradients, drive settings and boarding instructions. Use smooth low-speed control only when powered boarding is allowed. The operator should maintain a safe position and an escape route, never standing directly downhill of an uncontrolled chair. Freewheel mode removes powered braking on many models.

Control cables, joysticks and supports must clear door frames. A helper walking beside the chair needs enough platform and doorway space without stepping near an edge. Practise under competent supervision before travelling.

Plan manual-chair assistance

Manual wheelchair boarding can place substantial force through the attendant's hands, shoulders and footing. Push-handle height, occupant weight, ramp angle and available space all affect the task. Follow the chair instructions for ascent and descent direction. Never pull on detachable armrests, foot supports or a folding backrest.

If the regular helper cannot maintain controlled movement throughout the route, redesign the access method. Adding a second person informally may create conflicting forces unless a proper procedure has been assessed and practised.

Create a secure travel position

Boarding is only the first part of safe transport. An occupied wheelchair needs a suitable forward-facing or otherwise approved position, wheelchair tie-downs and occupant restraints installed and used as the vehicle conversion specifies. Parking brakes alone do not restrain a chair during driving. Head and postural support also require individual consideration.

If the chair travels empty, secure it and every removable component against movement. A folded ramp must latch in its transport position. Keep emergency exits, driver visibility and required controls unobstructed.

Inspect mechanisms and attachment points

Before use, examine hinges, locks, welds, mounting brackets, lips, straps, fasteners and edge guards. Fixed systems should not show movement at the van body. Removable equipment should sit exactly as instructed. Stop if a latch does not fully engage or a section is distorted.

Rehearse ordinary and emergency routines

Complete a supervised trial at the usual parking location. Deploy the ramp, board, position and restrain the chair, then reverse the process. Check effort, visibility, wheel clearance, door security and communication between passenger and helper. Repeat in representative lighting and weather where safe.

Learn how the equipment is handled after a power failure, damaged latch or obstructed route. Emergency actions should come from the manufacturer and conversion provider, not improvisation. Keep instructions accessible inside the vehicle.

Can a portable van ramp carry someone seated in a wheelchair?
