Measure around the seated user

Ask the regular helper to fit and remove the tray. Count separate pieces and decide where they are stored. A secure mount can still be unsuitable if fitting requires awkward bending or excessive hand strength. Follow the documented tightening method rather than applying extra force.
Keep controls fully accessible
Joystick, attendant control, brakes and freewheel levers must remain usable. A tray cut-out should not trap the controller when the user turns or changes seat position. Cables need protected routing without sharp bends. Check emergency access from both user and helper positions.
Never drill the tray or move a controller bracket without approval from the relevant equipment source. A cup, device or bag should not rest against control buttons. Conduct a low-speed function check after installation, then inspect for movement before normal travel.
Check material and edge finish
Clear acrylic allows visibility but may scratch; laminate, wood and padded surfaces have different cleaning and weight characteristics. Inspect every edge for sharpness, chips and exposed fixings. A raised rim can contain small items but may obstruct arm movement or transfers.
Confirm resistance to expected food, cleaning products and heat. Do not place hot cookware directly on a surface unless specifically permitted. Gloss can create glare, while transparent material may be hard to perceive for some users. Consider contrast without adding loose coverings that can slip.
Respect the stated load
Find the maximum distributed load and any lower limit for one-sided or swing-away use. The tray is not a lifting handle, transfer board or support for body weight unless expressly designed for that purpose. Heavy objects can change wheelchair balance and strain armrests.
Keep dense items near supported areas and stop if the surface flexes or mounts rotate. A device arm may create leverage beyond its mass. Ask whether a separate approved mount would be safer for valuable electronics. Recheck fasteners after the first uses.
Plan transfers and emergency removal
Decide whether the tray slides out, swings aside or must be lifted before every transfer. Practise the sequence with brakes applied according to the wheelchair instructions. The tray should not block a helper's safe position or the user's handholds.
An emergency release needs to be understood by regular carers without becoming easy to open accidentally. Label unfamiliar mechanisms discreetly if appropriate. Never leave a detached tray leaning where it can fall, and keep mounting bars from projecting into a transfer route.
Check doors, tables and transport
Measure the wheelchair's new overall width and length with the tray fitted. Corners can strike doorframes before wheels reach them. Confirm whether the chair can approach an existing table and whether the tray must be removed for vehicle loading.
During transport, secure the detached tray so it cannot become a moving object or scratch controls. Do not assume it can remain in place when the wheelchair is occupied in a vehicle. Follow specialist advice for the assessed chair, tie-down and occupant-restraint arrangement.
Create a cleaning routine
Food and drink can collect around rims, slots and clamps. Follow the permitted cleaning method and remove residue without flooding upholstery or electronics. Check whether padded covers can be laundered and dried completely. Avoid chemicals that cloud acrylic or weaken adhesives.
Inspect the underside as well as the visible surface. Loose screws, cracked corners and worn straps may first appear below. Stop using the tray if a mount shifts or an edge breaks. Replacement parts should match the identified product.
Complete a task-based trial
Fit the tray to the exact wheelchair and seat the user with normal supports. Try the intended activity for long enough to observe posture, reach and fatigue. Move carefully through a doorway and operate all controls. Repeat attachment and removal.
