Check whether the vehicle is designed to carry the scooter and whether the boot floor can take the load in the proposed position. The scooter still needs secure restraint after loading. Weigh the scooter in its loading configuration

Find the stated mass for the exact scooter and add anything that stays attached, such as the battery, basket, seat, canopy fittings or walking aids. If a component will always be removed, record its separate weight and storage place. Compare the loading total with the limit for the chosen ramp length and setup.

Do not rely on a capacity printed for another member of the same ramp range. Ask whether the rating assumes full support at both ends, a specified overlap or a particular distribution of weight. A three-wheel scooter loads the ramp differently from a four-wheel model, while small anti-tip wheels may touch at a transition.

Measure the boot opening and sill

Open the boot fully on level ground and measure between trim, hinges, catches and door seals. Record the sill height from the surface where the ramp feet will stand. With channels, confirm that front and rear wheels can remain centred even if their tracks differ. Three-wheel scooters require particular care because the single wheel and rear pair follow different lines.

Inspect raised edges, hinges and joining points that may interfere with small wheels. Check the transition at the boot sill against the scooter's ground clearance and wheelbase. A supervised trial with the intended equipment can reveal contact that drawings miss, but it should follow the ramp and scooter instructions and stop at the first sign of instability.

Secure the upper end correctly

Identify a strong, flat contact point approved for loading. Plastic bumper trim, a rounded sill or a loose boot protector may not provide dependable support. Follow the specified overlap and use every retention feature supplied for the ramp. Ask the manufacturer how the design is meant to resist movement as powered wheels begin climbing.

Protecting paintwork must not reduce grip or change the support arrangement. Do not add blankets, boards or homemade brackets unless written guidance permits them. If the vehicle needs a fixed fitting, have its location and effect checked by a competent installer. Reinspect the contact whenever trim, floor panels or the vehicle changes.

Control the scooter during ascent

Read the scooter's loading and freewheel guidance before attempting the slope. Some arrangements are pushed with drive disengaged; others may use powered movement under tightly controlled conditions. Never invent a technique from a video or a different model. The operator needs a secure position, a clear escape route and a way to stop movement immediately.

Agree who steers, who watches wheel alignment and who may give instructions. Nobody should stand downhill in the scooter's path or pull on the tiller as a lifting handle. Practise without luggage or time pressure. If the scooter surges, rolls back or requires excessive force, stop and reassess the method.

Handle the ramp without injury

Check the complete ramp weight, folded size, carry handles and locking catches. Ask the usual operator to lift it from its travel position, unfold it and place it against the boot. Observe reach over the bumper, twisting and finger clearance. A ramp can be within a person's lifting ability yet awkward because its weight sits far from the body.

If two people are required, ensure both will be available at every journey. Keep the deck clean enough to grip without transferring mud into the car. Follow the maker's folding sequence and never carry a ramp by a loose section. A trolley or storage sleeve may help only if it is compatible and has its own secure place.

Restrain everything for road travel

Once loaded, the scooter and ramp must not be able to slide, tip or strike passengers. Use vehicle-compatible restraint points and follow advice for the scooter. Apply the specified parking and power-off procedure. Loose batteries, seats and baskets also need secure positions; placing them around the scooter is not a restraint plan.

Check payload limits and keep the driver's view clear. The ramp should not rest against controls, cables or fragile bodywork. After the first few journeys, inspect for movement marks and adjust only through the approved system. Occupied travel is a different task requiring an appropriate accessible vehicle and restraint arrangement.

Prepare for the return journey

Loading at home is only half the assessment. The ramp has to come out of the boot before the scooter, sometimes in rain, darkness or a restricted bay. Make sure it remains reachable and can be deployed without unloading unstable luggage. Carry gloves or cleaning items only where the instructions and hygiene plan support them.

Write a short loading sequence and keep contact details for breakdown help. Before departure, confirm the destination offers a safe unloading area. If a route changes, reassess rather than assuming a nearby car park will work. A reliable solution is one the operator can complete in both directions under foreseeable conditions.

Inspect the setup before each trip

Look for bent edges, loose fixings, damaged hinges, contamination and worn feet. Check that sections lock and that straps or pins are present. Examine the scooter tyres and confirm the boot contact is unobstructed. Remove damaged equipment from use and seek the supplier's advice rather than attempting a temporary repair.

Retain model numbers, load information and instructions with the vehicle plan. Review the arrangement after a change of scooter, car, operator or regular destination. These checks protect the careful measurements made at purchase and prevent a familiar loading routine from concealing a new hazard.
