Record the narrowest usable gap with the leaf secured in its normal open position. Handles, closers, tracks and frames may reduce clearance. Measure the wheelchair's hubs, hand rims, controls and foot supports. Seat width does not describe the full envelope that must pass through the doorway.

Self-propellers need room for fingers around the push rims, while powered-chair users need joystick clearance. A helper may require standing space beside or behind the chair. If the approach is angled, the wheel path can use more width than a straight entry. Trial the actual movement rather than subtracting two measurements and assuming success.

Provide level space to align

At the lower side, the chair should be able to face the ramp squarely before climbing. At the upper side, all wheels need to clear the transition before a turn or door operation. Mats, furniture and radiators can steal this space even when the permanent dimensions appear adequate.

Repeat the exercise in reverse. A tight internal corridor may make leaving harder than entering. If a door swings across the landing, consider changes through an appropriate access assessment. A longer or wider ramp cannot resolve every conflict between the chair, landing and moving door.

Match the ramp form to the obstacle

Threshold, wedge and bridge designs differ

A wedge may address one rise, while a bridge-style section can cross a track without bearing on it. Some systems combine pieces designed to work together. Select only arrangements described by the manufacturer for the measured profile. Do not stack loose ramps or place a board beneath one end.

Check which side is higher and how the top edge is retained. Rubber, metal and modular materials have different support and trimming instructions. Cutting or drilling may affect strength and warranty. Ask for a drawing of the proposed configuration where the threshold shape is irregular.

Consider castors and ground clearance

Small front wheels can stop at a sharp lower edge, while low footplates or anti-tip bars can catch as the chair changes angle. Powered chairs and scooters may have drive wheels in different positions. Compare the complete wheelbase and underside clearance with both transitions.

A slow supervised trial can reveal contact, but never add speed to jump a lip. Stop if the chair pitches, scrapes or changes direction. Ask whether a smoother transition, altered threshold or different access route would solve the underlying problem more reliably.

Support every edge properly

The ramp should rest on firm, level surfaces as its instructions describe. Carpet pile, loose vinyl, cracked paving and flexible door trim can allow movement. Check whether the product needs a minimum overlap, fixing or anti-slip base, and confirm that the doorway provides it.

Avoid protective cloths or loose mats beneath the ramp because they can slide or change its angle. Any permanent fixing must avoid hidden services and preserve the door's structure, drainage and fire performance. Use a competent installer where the work extends beyond positioning a purpose-made portable item.

Keep weather and water outside

External thresholds collect rain, grit and leaves that reduce grip and prevent a ramp sitting flat. Check drainage falls and clean contact surfaces before use. A ramp must not direct water through the doorway or cover a drainage slot that protects the building.

Follow approved cleaning methods and inspect textured surfaces for wear. Do not add adhesive strips or carpet without manufacturer agreement. In frost or heavy rain, have another access plan if the route cannot be kept safe. Indoor ramps also need attention when wet tyres carry water across them.

Decide how a portable ramp will be handled

Measure the ramp's mass and folded or rolled dimensions. The usual helper should demonstrate carrying, positioning and removing it without trapping fingers or blocking the wheelchair user. If the user travels alone, a ramp stored on the far side of the door may be useless even when it fits perfectly.

Choose a storage place that is dry, accessible and outside escape routes. Agree how the door is secured while the ramp is placed. Do not leave a temporary product installed continuously unless its instructions and the property arrangement support that use. Repeated setup needs a quick but genuine inspection each time.

Check permissions and shared access

A rented home, communal corridor, shop entrance or listed building can involve other decision-makers. Establish ownership and obtain necessary consent before fixing or altering surfaces. Public and workplace access may also engage duties that require a broader professional assessment than a household product comparison.

Keep neighbouring routes and fire exits clear. A ramp that projects into a corridor or pavement can create a barrier for somebody else. Record how and when a portable unit is deployed, or define inspection responsibility for a permanent one. Access should not depend on an ambiguous handover between occupants and staff.

Run a controlled handover

Use the intended wheelchair, user and helper under calm conditions. Follow the ramp and chair instructions, moving slowly and straight. Check entry, mid-point and exit in both directions. The user should have a clear stopping method, while helpers remain out of the downhill path.

Write down the approved position and any door setting needed. Show other regular helpers how to inspect contact, edges and cleanliness. If safe use relies on precise placement, a small floor mark may help only where the property owner and manufacturer agree and it cannot be confused with another setup.

Recheck after equipment or flooring changes

Inspect for curling edges, loosened fixings, cracks, distortion and reduced grip. Remove the ramp from use if damage or movement appears. Keep model details and supplier contacts with the household access record so replacement parts and advice relate to the correct item.

Measure again after a new wheelchair, cushion, foot support, door, mat or floor covering. These changes can alter clearance and approach even when the step looks identical. Door-ramp suitability is a relationship between equipment, person and place, so every substantial change deserves review.
