Separate vehicle loading from passenger access

Mobility ramps for cars may be intended to load an empty wheelchair or scooter into a boot, or they may form part of an occupied access arrangement. Decide which task is required before measuring anything. An unoccupied loading ramp does not automatically suit a person seated in a wheelchair. Measure the real vehicle aperture

Open the boot, tailgate or side door fully on level ground and measure the narrowest width, clear height, sill depth and height above the road. Make a dimensioned sketch from fixed points so a ramp supplier can understand the shape, and repeat the survey if the vehicle suspension or parking angle changes loading height.

Check the mobility device in transport form

Measure the wheelchair or scooter exactly as it will be loaded. Folding the backrest, removing a battery or lowering a tiller can alter height and handling, but each step must follow the maker’s instructions. Record the heaviest component if the device is dismantled and label connectors or removable supports. If it remains assembled, include baskets, anti-tip wheels and control modules. Confirm that no part will strike the roof or door frame as it moves up the chosen ramp angle.

Calculate the loading angle

Use the actual sill rise and proposed ramp length to understand the incline. A longer ramp can reduce effort, yet it needs more space behind the car and may be harder to store. Check the ramp and mobility device limits together, including ground clearance at the crest. Low footplates or scooter bases may bottom out where the ramp meets the boot. Test geometry with professional guidance or an unoccupied demonstration where appropriate; never use a person as the first proof of fit.

Provide a clear loading zone

Choose a parking place with firm, level ground and enough protected space for the open door, full ramp and handler. Avoid directing the ramp into moving traffic or across a pedestrian route. At home, consider lighting and drainage. During a journey, identify safe alternatives if the usual bay is occupied. Warning triangles or a helper do not make a dangerous road position suitable. If rear loading cannot be protected, a different parking orientation or side-access vehicle may be needed.

Match the ramp surface and width

Compare usable deck width with the wheel track, allowing for steering correction without riding an edge. Paired channels may be compact but require precise spacing and can be unsuitable for devices with different front and rear tracks. A broad deck is easier to align but can be heavier. Look at edge protection, grip, hinge position and the lower transition. Confirm the stated load includes the device and any approved operator involvement, rather than relying on an unqualified visual estimate.

Secure both ends before movement

The upper lip must bear on the part of the vehicle identified by the ramp or adaptation instructions. Plastic bumper trim may not be a structural support. Fit locating straps, pins or brackets exactly as directed and confirm both lower feet rest evenly. The handbrake and transmission should be in the required state. Do not let a helper hold the ramp as a substitute for positive location. If the car settles noticeably under load, stop and reassess the specified setup.

Choose a controlled propulsion method

An empty manual chair may be pushed, a powered chair may have an approved driving procedure and a scooter can require a winch. Follow the mobility device and vehicle adaptation guidance. Stand clear of the downhill path and avoid pulling from an unstable position inside the boot. A powered winch needs a suitable attachment point, rated equipment and a controlled cable path. Never clip to armrests, footrests or other parts that were not designed as loading points.

Manage batteries and free-wheel controls

Powered mobility equipment may have transport, isolation or free-wheel settings that affect loading and securing. Learn them before reaching the ramp and return controls to the state required for restraint. Removable batteries need correct handling, terminal protection and secure carriage according to their instructions. Keep keys or controllers away from accidental operation while hands are near wheels. If the chair cannot brake in the chosen mode, the loading system must provide the control specified by its manufacturer.

Plan storage inside the car

Measure the folded ramp and decide where it sits after the mobility device is aboard. It must not obstruct the driver’s view, interfere with seats or become a loose object during braking. Use suitable restraint points rather than wedging it beside the wheelchair. Preserve access to emergency equipment and to the ramp itself at the destination. Practise unloading luggage in the intended order; a ramp buried beneath cases can leave the passenger waiting while the vehicle is reorganised at the roadside.

Use proper transport restraints

Once loaded, secure the mobility device and any occupant using systems approved for that vehicle and chair. Loading straps and portable ramp handles are not tie-down points. Check that removable parts cannot move and that controls are protected. A folded chair in the boot still needs restraint as cargo. Where a person remains seated, specialist wheelchair tie-down and occupant restraint arrangements are essential. Ask the converter or qualified installer to demonstrate the complete sequence and record the designated anchor locations.

Rehearse at home before travelling

Practise with the vehicle on a known level surface and enough time to stop. Allocate tasks, agree one stop word and repeat unloading as carefully as loading. Watch clearance at the sill and roof throughout the movement. If a helper cannot control the device or lift the ramp safely, change the system rather than hoping the destination will be easier. A successful rehearsal should produce a written sequence another trained family member can follow without improvising.

Inspect after every journey

Road grit, water and luggage can affect a ramp stored in the car. Check hinges, deck, locating parts, feet and straps before the next use, and clean them as directed. Look for damage after sudden braking or if cargo has shifted. Re-measure when changing vehicle, wheelchair, tyres or seating components. Keep service contacts and instructions with the travel record. The combination remains suitable only while the vehicle aperture, loading equipment and mobility device still match the assessed method.

Review manual-handling demands honestly

Loading an empty chair can still involve awkward pushing, bending and component lifting. Record the mass of each removable part and the height at which it must be placed. A handler who manages the sequence once may not be able to repeat it after a long journey or in poor weather. Consider a suitable hoist, winch or different vehicle arrangement when the task exceeds comfortable control. Reassess after injury, fatigue or a change of regular driver. The chosen method should work on ordinary days without relying on a rushed lift or an unstable reach.

Can the same ramp load a scooter and wheelchair?

Only if dimensions, wheel tracks, mass, controls and the ramp’s permitted use have been checked for both devices.
