Fold from the normal storage position

Ask the person responsible to remove the cushion or footrests as instructed, fold the chair and place it in its actual cupboard or boot. Record complete and heaviest-part weights. Check finger clearance and whether the frame stays closed when lifted. A folded chair should not block an exit, lean where it can fall or require the user to reach across an unsafe gap to retrieve it.

Prepare for helper assistance

Agree when somebody pushes and which parts they may hold. Push handles must suit the helper's height, and bags should not be hung where they change balance. On a slope, the combined weight and attendant ability matter. Practise communication so the user knows before movement begins. If the front path or local pavement forms part of home use, trial cambers, dropped kerbs and gradients within the chair's instructions. Lightweight folding chairs may transmit more vibration or use small castors. Check tyre type and anti-tip equipment. Do not infer all-terrain ability from large rear wheels. Map an alternative for ice, heavy rain or an obstacle that the user cannot cross reliably.

Inspect components that are handled often

Folding, removing wheels and swinging footrests place regular demand on catches and joints. Follow the maintenance schedule and look for frame movement, loose spokes, damaged tyres, ineffective brakes and upholstery wear. Keep quick-release axles clean and confirm they lock after refitting. Stop using the chair when a security check fails, and obtain the correct parts and competent repair rather than improvising.

Complete the purchase and handover

Confirm exact size, wheel position, cushion, footrests, anti-tip parts and included tools in writing. Check delivery charges, setup, returns and warranty. On arrival, compare the chair with the specification before use. The user and helpers should demonstrate folding, brakes, transfers and wheel refitting. Review after several weeks of ordinary home journeys and update the setup if a qualified assessor recommends changes.
