Hinges, joins or telescopic overlaps should not create an unexpected ridge along the travel line. Look at how water and debris leave the deck. The aim is a predictable route from lower paving to upper landing, without a wheel striking an edge or a low component grounding.

Compare folding with telescopic construction

A folding ramp may reduce its packed length but remain a wide, heavy object. Telescopic channels can shorten further and split the load, while requiring careful extension and paired alignment. Inspect the locking sequence, carrying handles and pinch points for each design. Ask the regular helper to perform a dry setup on level ground. If a mechanism cannot be positively checked, or if two channels repeatedly move out of parallel, its convenient storage size does not compensate for an unreliable deployment routine.

Confirm load information precisely

Find the maximum load for the exact model, length and support arrangement, then compare it with the wheelchair, occupant and essential carried items when occupied use is permitted. Do not add the ratings of two parts unless they are specified as one system. Capacity is a boundary, not a promise that dimensions, gradient or handling are suitable. Decide where the assistant will stand

Trace the operator's position during approach, ascent, pause and departure. Feet need reliable ground, and hands must reach the wheelchair controls without pulling from the side. On a narrow path, a wall or railing may remove the space assumed by the operating instructions. Agree who watches wheel alignment and who handles the door if more than one helper is involved. Provide storage near the steps

Practise in both directions

Recheck after weather or building changes

Rain, frost, leaves and grit can alter the lower surface, while a replacement threshold or repaired step can change the upper bearing. Inspect both route and ramp before every use. Look for movement, wear, damaged joints, contamination or missing fittings. Follow the stated cleaning and drying instructions. Repeat the measurements after building work, a new door, a different wheelchair or a change in regular helper. Do not continue from habit when the conditions on which the original choice depended are no longer the same.

Are two steps always suitable for a portable ramp?

No. Total rise, available run, landings, support and operator space determine feasibility; the step count alone cannot do so.

Can a mat stay beneath the lower end?
