A candidate remains viable only when its full working length can be placed on approved contact points with clear approach and landing space.

Compare platform and channel systems

A single platform gives small castors one uninterrupted surface and can be useful where several wheel tracks vary. Channel pairs can divide the carrying load into narrower pieces, although their spacing and alignment demand more care. Compare centre gaps, raised edges, usable width, adjustment hardware and the operator's view of each wheel. Check whether the wheelchair design permits the proposed arrangement. The lightest component is not necessarily the easiest system when two tracks must be positioned precisely on every journey.

Audit every bearing surface

Inspect the proposed top and bottom contacts rather than judging the stair alone. Rounded stone, loose trim, compressible matting, gravel and crossfall may prevent stable support. Mark exactly where lips and feet would sit, then check whether doors, drains or paving joints interfere. Never use loose timber, bricks or folded material to correct an uneven contact. If a route needs improvised packing, remove it from the portable-ramp shortlist until the surface or access plan is properly resolved.

Score folding and extension mechanisms

Open each candidate on level ground and identify hinges, sliders, locking pins and carrying straps. Note how the operator confirms that every joint is fully engaged. Telescopic sections may need cleaning around their tracks, while lengthwise folds can introduce a central ridge. Count the actions from storage to ready state and observe finger-clearance points. A mechanism deserves a higher score when the regular handler can inspect, deploy and refold it without twisting, guessing or supporting weight in an unstable posture.

Calculate the full handling load

Record complete mass, the heaviest separable part, folded dimensions and handle positions. Walk the actual storage-to-stair route with a safe equivalent load, including doors, corners and any separate steps. Include removal and return after the wheelchair has crossed. If two handlers are required, document that as a permanent condition. A ramp that can be lifted once may still be impractical for repeated journeys, especially when the operator must also assist the wheelchair or keep a public route clear.

Verify capacity as a configuration

Find the load limit for the precise model, length and documented support conditions. Where occupied use is permitted, include the wheelchair, person and essential carried items. Capacity is a ceiling, not evidence that the geometry, operator or staircase is suitable. Do not add ratings printed on separate tracks unless they are supplied and tested as one system. Retain the source and date for each figure so a later shortlist review does not confuse a family name with the chosen variant.

Plan traffic management

A deployed ramp can narrow a hall, cross a pavement or interrupt a shared entrance. Observe each location at the times it is normally used, including deliveries and school runs. Decide who prevents other people approaching while the crossing takes place and how the ramp is removed promptly. Keep fire doors and escape paths operational. In communal or rented property, obtain the appropriate permission. A temporary access aid should not leave another resident, child or mobility-aid user facing an unexpected edge.

Build weather limits into the plan

Outdoor bearing points can change after rain, frost, leaves or loose grit. Record lighting, drainage and the alternative route used when conditions are unsuitable. Follow the stated cleaning and drying method, paying particular attention to joints and textured surfaces. A deep pattern does not guarantee dependable grip for every tyre. Recheck both contacts after severe weather or building work. Portability is useful only when the operator has a clear rule for postponing a crossing that cannot be set up securely.

Run a documented two-direction trial

Begin with the safest unloaded checks described by the instructions. During an appropriately supported trial, assess ascent and descent separately because gravity changes effort and stance. Watch alignment at every wheel, clearance at the crest and movement at both contacts. Agree an immediate stop call and abandon any attempt that depends on speed or a last-second correction. Record deployment, crossing, recovery and storage, then ask the regular handler to repeat the sequence while another person observes blind spots.

Maintain a location-based decision register

Give every obstacle a row for rise, run, width, surface, door movement, wheelchair geometry, proposed ramp, support method, capacity, packed size and operator. Mark unknowns openly and attach dated supplier answers. Use red flags for improvised support, obstructed landings or uncontrolled handling. The register makes it clear why a ramp remains under consideration and prevents equipment approved for a modest doorstep migrating to an unassessed flight. Review it whenever the chair, helper, building or storage arrangement changes.

Can one portable ramp serve every stair location?
