Secure the top and bottom interfaces

The lower end needs firm, level contact across its support area. Sloping paving can introduce sideways tilt and loose gravel can permit movement. Manage the space needed for a long slope

A ramp long enough for several stairs can extend well into a hall, path or car park. Measure pedestrian circulation, gate opening and vehicle movement during deployment. Use barriers or supervision where the temporary route could be crossed unknowingly, following the venue's access plan. Preserve another safe route for pedestrians who need the stairs. At home, consider bins, deliveries and neighbours. The upper landing must remain free for door operation, and the lower approach must not start in traffic. Practise controlled ascent and descent

Deploy the ramp exactly as instructed and use a calm, supervised trial. Agree who controls the chair and a clear stop signal. Keep the chair aligned, use a steady pace and avoid abrupt steering. The helper should maintain stable footing without standing directly downhill. Observe lower castors and low underframe parts at both transitions. Descending may limit the user's view and should be assessed separately from ascent. Do not build speed to overcome a lip or attempt a turn on the slope. If the chair drifts, scrapes or cannot pause predictably under its approved method, stop. Reconsider geometry or another access solution rather than depending on greater effort.

Account for weather and contamination

Portable ramps used outdoors encounter wet leaves, mud, frost and grit. Inspect and clean the surface according to its instructions before placement. Do not add carpet, loose mats or unapproved coatings for extra grip. Check drainage at the bottom and water near the doorway. A long metal section may be awkward in wind and should not be left unsecured. Store it protected and dry where directed, then inspect hinges and locks on redeployment. The access plan should identify an alternative when weather lies outside safe use. Organise use at temporary venues

For events, community buildings or visits, confirm the stair measurements before transporting a ramp. Identify trained staff, storage, deployment time and the route kept clear. The user should not arrive to find that equipment is locked away or that the responsible person is absent. Mark which entrance the ramp serves and retain the product instructions. Temporary access should be available for the relevant operating period, not assembled hurriedly after a request. Consider emergency exit arrangements and obtain appropriate venue guidance. A portable solution can be useful when carefully managed, but its availability depends on a service process as much as on the physical panel.

Inspect after every move

Carrying and transport can damage edges, hinges, latches and locating parts even when the ramp has not yet borne a wheelchair. Check for bends, cracks, looseness, worn grip and contamination. Confirm all sections open fully and locks engage. Retire equipment from use after an impact or unexpected change until appropriately assessed. Maintain a simple log where a ramp serves multiple locations. Do not swap similar-looking sections or channels between products. Labels, capacity information and instructions should remain readable. Repeated inspections matter because portability exposes the ramp to more handling and variable support surfaces than a fixed installation, making correct setup a fresh requirement each time.

Compare the complete temporary-access plan

Bring together stair rise, available run, landings, wheelchair measurements, occupied mass, user control, helper availability, folded handling and storage. Check documented support, span, width, capacity, surface and deployment method for each candidate. Include pedestrian management, weather and a fallback route. Seek current advice on permissions and access duties for the setting. If the required length, carrying task or deployment zone is unrealistic, move to an installed ramp, lift or alternative entrance assessment. A successful portable arrangement is one that can be placed correctly every time and used under controlled conditions; being able to carry the ramp to the stairs is only one small part.
