Decide whether the chair is pushed, pulled, driven or moved using an approved attendant control. Follow the wheelchair instructions for brakes, freewheel mode and power. The operator needs stable footing and a position that remains safe as the chair reaches the load floor. Pulling from deep inside a boot can strain the back; pushing from below can leave a helper trying to catch rollback. Powered equipment should use a controlled speed and known controller position, without standing directly in its path. If one person cannot guide the chair smoothly at every point, investigate an appropriate hoist or alternative transport arrangement rather than depending on momentum or extra force.
Small front wheels may hesitate at the lower edge, while anti-tip bars, footplate mounts, motors or battery housings can contact the upper transition. Approach in the direction allowed by the equipment instructions and keep the chair aligned between the ramp edges. Do not bounce or accelerate through a contact point. During a properly supported trial, pause at each transition and observe clearances from the side without placing hands beneath the chair. Ramp flex, uneven support or a wheel approaching an edge requires an immediate stop. Changing the chair orientation may affect control and stability, so make that decision with relevant guidance instead of experimenting during an everyday journey.
After the chair reaches the vehicle, prevent it from moving during travel using a method suitable for the car and unoccupied equipment. Parking brakes alone may not provide crash restraint. Use appropriate secure points and avoid delicate armrests, folding mechanisms or detachable wheels unless documentation identifies them. Other users may need a different vehicle or an occupied-access conversion. Compare the complete effort for each regular driver, not only the heaviest moment. Include the passenger transfer, removed components, wet-weather handling, parking footprint, storage, maintenance and use at the destination. A trial with the actual chair and car helps reveal whether a seemingly simple ramp creates more steps than it removes.
At the destination, park on a suitable surface and keep the passenger secure while preparing the chair. Clear the deployment area, inspect and position the ramp as instructed, then unload the wheelchair under control. Refit accessories in the planned order and check that every locking mechanism is engaged before the passenger transfers. Avoid leaving the person unsupported while a helper searches for components. After transfer, stow the ramp and close the vehicle before moving away. Write the sequence down for occasional helpers and include the reverse journey. A consistent order reduces the chance of forgetting a cushion, connector, wheel pin or storage restraint when attention is divided.
Before use, check the ramp surface, edges, hinges, locating parts, handles and fasteners for dirt, damage or unexpected movement. Clean and store it according to the maker's directions. Inspect wheelchair folding locks, wheel-release mechanisms and removable components as part of the transport routine. If the ramp is dropped, the vehicle support area is damaged or the chair's mass and dimensions change, reassess compatibility. Do not straighten, drill or modify structural parts without approval. Record product identifiers, instructions and supplier contacts with the vehicle documents. Regular review also matters when a helper's strength or the passenger's transfer needs change, even if the hardware appears unchanged.

Add folded-ramp storage limits, suitable top support, intended movement method and restraint plan. Use this brief to compare documented products and ask precise questions. Reject vague claims that a ramp is universal or fits any car. The chosen arrangement should work at both ends of typical journeys without improvised lifting, unstable support or loose equipment. If the evidence does not show a controlled sequence, return to the wider options with an adviser. A successful setup is defined by the whole passenger-and-chair journey, not by getting the wheelchair across one bumper.
