Small front castors must meet the entry without catching in a gap. For channel ramps, measure inner and outer wheel tracks through the actual configuration. Bariatric, reclining and powered chairs may need wider or structurally different equipment. A capacity number alone does not prove compatibility; the complete wheelbase, track, ground clearance and loading pattern must also suit the surface.
A stair ramp needs the exact top attachment, overlap or locating method specified for it. The bearing surface must be sound, large enough and free from loose coverings. Test no substitute fixing and do not rely on friction where the instructions require pins, hooks or another restraint. Folding sections must open fully and lock as designed. Check that handrails or walls do not stop the ramp sitting square. Before each use, inspect placement from both sides where this can be done safely. Any rocking, twisting or partial contact calls for withdrawal and reassessment rather than an extra push to force the chair across.
Stairs create a serious consequence if a wheel leaves the running surface. Review raised edges, balustrades, handrails and gaps beside the ramp with a competent person. Outdoor stair ramps collect rain, leaves, grit and sometimes frost. Confirm environmental limits and the cleaning method for the chosen surface. Drainage should move water away without washing debris onto the approach or creating a slippery patch at the foot. Do not spread unapproved salt or chemicals that can attack metal or coatings. Check traction with the expected wheelchair tyres, while recognising that a textured deck cannot make an excessive gradient acceptable. Store removable equipment dry and secure when it is not in use. After severe weather, inspect the route, supports and landing before assuming yesterday's safe placement remains unchanged.
A temporary ramp may occupy most of a stairway and can create a trip or evacuation obstruction. Establish whether it may remain in place and who removes it after use. In flats, rented homes or shared entrances, consult the responsible owner, landlord or managing body before fixing or storing equipment in communal space. Preserve required handrail access and escape routes. Do not leave folded sections where children can play with them or where they narrow a corridor. A workable solution defines both wheelchair access and the ordinary use of the stairs, with responsibilities clear rather than negotiated each time someone arrives.
Look for bent sections, loose hinges, damaged welds, contamination, worn grip areas and movement at the top contact. Verify that all panels or channels belong to the same approved system and are facing the correct way. Remove loose bags that could shift balance, secure the user's feet and follow the wheelchair instructions. Keep the route clear until the chair has reached level ground. Stop after unusual flexing, noise or loss of alignment and arrange competent inspection. A short pre-use routine is especially valuable on stairs because a small positioning error can place a wheel close to an edge before the operator can recover.
Write down the measured rise, selected gradient, ramp model, component order, attachment method, load, compatible wheelchair and approved operating procedure. Include reference images of correct deployment and contact details for maintenance. Review the arrangement after alterations to the steps, doorway, chair, user's ability or assistance pattern. Temporary equipment should not become a permanent answer without considering planning, building and access implications. A successful stair-ramp choice provides repeatable alignment, stable landings and a manageable routine across the real flight. If those conditions cannot be achieved, the record should make that limitation visible and prompt evaluation of another access method.
