Clarify what the ramp must do at the vehicle

A car wheelchair ramp may be intended to load an unoccupied folding chair, move an occupied wheelchair into an adapted vehicle or handle another mobility device. These are fundamentally different tasks. Record the wheelchair, whether the person remains seated, the vehicle make and conversion, who operates the equipment and where loading occurs. Do not use an unoccupied-equipment ramp for an occupied transfer unless the complete system is designed and approved for that purpose. Start with the journey and handling method rather than ramp length. Vehicle converters, wheelchair providers and restraint specialists should be involved where their systems meet.

Measure the vehicle opening and load floor

Record clear aperture width and height, sill depth, load-floor height and available space inside the vehicle. Measure with doors or tailgate in their working positions, including hinges, latches and trim. Note the ground where the vehicle normally parks, since kerbs and crossfall change the ramp angle. For an occupied wheelchair, include seated head height, foot supports and any powered seating. For stored equipment, measure the folded package and turning room. A ramp that reaches the sill can still fail if the chair cannot clear the roof, turn inside or sit within the intended restraint area.

Distinguish portable loading from a conversion

Loose folding ramps can sometimes load unoccupied equipment into a suitable vehicle, provided capacity, support and handling requirements are met. Occupied entry normally belongs to a designed conversion incorporating a ramp or lift, floor, headroom and wheelchair and occupant restraint arrangements. Do not create an improvised passenger route by laying a portable panel against a standard boot. Ask a competent converter which vehicle structures may carry the load and how the installation is approved. Keeping these use cases separate prevents a convenient accessory from being assigned responsibilities that depend on the entire vehicle system.

Calculate the deployed angle at parking height

Use the measured load-floor rise and effective supported ramp length for the vehicle in its normal loading condition. Suspension height, kneeling systems and where the vehicle is parked can change the angle. Check the ramp and wheelchair instructions and any conversion documentation. A short panel may be manageable for an empty manual chair yet too steep or abrupt for a heavy powered model. Do not park partly on a kerb to reduce rise unless the conversion provider has assessed that arrangement. Record the required parking surface so the routine is not transferred casually to a sloping roadside or soft verge.

Verify capacity for chair and operator method

Establish whether the stated load includes only the wheelchair or also the seated user, attendant or loading aid. Add batteries, cushions, bags and mounted equipment. Capacity may depend on full extension, correct hinge support and attachment to identified vehicle points. Do not stand beside an occupied chair on a ramp unless the design expressly provides that method. Powered-chair motors are not a substitute for a suitable loading system. Retain the exact model information and load conditions in the vehicle record. Where figures conflict or are close to a limit, obtain authoritative clarification before loading.

Check upper attachment and lower footing

The ramp must connect to the vehicle using its designed hooks, pins, tracks or conversion mechanism. Plastic trim and bumper covers are not automatically structural bearing points. At the bottom, both contacts require firm ground with enough straight approach. Inspect for exhaust heat, tow bars, door hardware and sharp edges. Portable equipment should not rely on a helper's foot or the wheelchair's mass to hold it. Ensure the connection remains visible during setup and cannot release as weight transfers across the sill. Stop when the ramp rocks, a latch does not indicate engagement or parking conditions prevent even support.

Protect headroom and internal clearances

As the wheelchair climbs, seated head height follows a rising path toward the door frame before reaching the load floor. Check this dynamic clearance, not only the height inside the cabin. Foot supports, controller, push handles and oxygen equipment also need room. Once inside, the chair must reach its designated position without striking seats or conversion hardware. Powered seating should remain in the documented loading position. Never ask the user to duck beyond their safe ability or remove a prescribed support to gain clearance. A suitable vehicle and ramp combination accommodates the complete seated configuration through the whole entry arc.

Plan control of the chair during loading

Agree whether an occupied chair is driven, pushed, guided by a winch or moved by another approved system. Follow the conversion and wheelchair instructions. The operator needs clear communication, a secure stance and an accessible stop control. Nobody should stand directly downhill or pull on removable arm supports. Winch attachment points must be those specified, with the cable aligned and inspected. Do not mix powered driving and winching unless the procedure expressly requires it. Rehearse controls without a passenger where appropriate, then commission the actual method under competent supervision before relying on it for a journey.

Integrate wheelchair and occupant restraints

Getting a chair into the vehicle does not make it ready for travel. An occupied wheelchair requires a compatible wheelchair tie-down and occupant-restraint system installed and used according to its instructions, with the chair positioned as specified. Identify recognised attachment points and keep them accessible during loading. A lap belt used for posture is not a vehicle occupant restraint. Remove or secure loose accessories as directed. Work with the converter and restraint provider rather than attaching straps to convenient frame parts. The ramp, floor, chair securement and passenger restraint form one transport system and should be reviewed together.

Make manual handling realistic

For portable ramps and unoccupied chairs, record the heaviest single lift, folded dimensions, handle position and reach into the vehicle. Rehearse with the person who normally loads it, using an empty representative setup. Avoid twisting over a bumper or catching fingers in folding sections. Remove only chair parts permitted by its instructions and store them securely. A collection of lighter components can still create repeated awkward lifts. If handling is unreliable, consider a hoist, lift, different ramp format or vehicle adaptation assessed for the task. The routine must remain manageable at both ends of the journey, not just on the home driveway.

Secure equipment for travel

A portable ramp, detached foot supports and folded wheelchair must be restrained so they cannot move during braking or collision. Use storage points and methods appropriate to the vehicle. Protect ramp lips, hinges and locks from other luggage. Keep emergency equipment and exits accessible. Do not place a heavy section where it can fall when the tailgate opens. After arrival, unload on a firm level area before bringing the wheelchair into the working zone. Safe carriage preserves the equipment and protects occupants; fitting everything into the boot is only the first part of the storage decision.

Inspect before departure and after impact

Check deck, hinges, attachment parts, surface and vehicle interfaces before loading. For installed systems, follow the conversion service schedule and test controls as instructed. Clean contamination without using unapproved lubricants or coatings. After a ramp strike, dropped portable section, vehicle collision or unusual movement, remove the system from use until it is competently assessed. Record faults against the exact component and serial details. Tyres, brakes and wheelchair controls also need to function predictably before loading begins. A travel deadline should not turn a changed noise or incomplete latch into an accepted condition.

Commission the complete travel routine

Run through parking, opening the vehicle, deploying the ramp, positioning the wheelchair, loading, securing, travelling, releasing and unloading. Use the intended people and equipment under appropriate supervision. Confirm clear communication and a safe stopping response at each stage. Repeat only the parts needed to establish consistency, without testing limits. Keep instructions and support contacts in the vehicle. Review after a wheelchair, vehicle, seating or helper change. A car wheelchair ramp is suitable when the whole travel routine is controlled and compatible, whether it loads stored equipment or forms one part of an approved occupied-transport conversion.
