Start with the doorway, step or vehicle rather than a preferred ramp length. A measured route makes it possible to compare products sensibly and exposes problems that a catalogue image cannot show.
Powered chairs can be heavy and may respond sharply to a slope, particularly when the controller is sensitive or the approach is short. The user should not have to correct their line at the ramp edge. Record the rise, clear width, landing space and surface condition, then discuss uncertain points with the ramp manufacturer, wheelchair supplier or an appropriate access professional.
Watch how the chair reaches the obstacle during an ordinary journey. Note turns, door swings, kerbs, mats and furniture that narrow the approach. Measure the space needed to line up squarely, because entering a ramp at an angle can put one wheel close to an edge. At the top, allow room for the complete chair to leave the ramp before it must turn or stop.
Repeat the exercise in both directions. A powered chair may be easy to position on the outward journey yet awkward on the return, especially where a closing door or parked vehicle changes the available space. Include the helper's standing position if assistance is expected. A workable ramp plan covers the movement before, on and after the slope.
Measure vertically from the lower travel surface to the level where the ramp deck will finish. Check both sides of the threshold, as paving and floors may not be level. Then measure the clear horizontal run without assuming that a flowerpot, doormat or parked car will always be moved. Record the figures and the date so that later product comparisons use the same basis.
Do not estimate gradient from appearance alone. The suitable relationship between rise and ramp length depends on the equipment instructions, the chair, the user and the setting. A longer ramp can create a gentler slope, but it needs more room and may become difficult to lift. If the available run is restricted, seek advice rather than forcing a convenient length into the space.
Find the widest fixed point on the electric wheelchair, which may be the drive wheels, hubs, arm supports or another fitting rather than the seat. Measure the chair in the configuration used on the ramp. Compare that figure with the ramp's stated usable deck width, not its overall outside width, and retain enough side clearance for accurate steering.
For channel ramps, confirm that both front and rear wheels remain fully supported through the complete movement. Some powered chairs have different front and rear track widths, small castors or anti-tip wheels that do not follow the same line as the drive wheels. A broad single deck may be simpler where the wheel paths vary, but its own weight and storage demands still need checking.
Use the combined weight of the chair, its user and anything carried, including batteries, bags, oxygen equipment or accessories. Compare this total with the limit for the exact ramp model and length. Load ratings can vary within a product family, so a figure shown beside another size is not reliable evidence for the version being considered.
Ask whether the rating assumes particular support, overlap or fixing. The chair's weight is concentrated through a small number of wheels and changes position as it climbs. Never treat spare capacity as permission to ignore poor support or a damaged deck. If the total is uncertain, obtain current chair specifications and weigh removable luggage separately before making a decision.
The upper lip or plate must rest on a sound surface approved by the maker. A loose sill, plastic trim or rounded vehicle edge may not provide the required bearing area. Check whether the design uses locating pins, straps or another retention feature, and confirm that these can be fitted without obstructing the chair's wheels or the doorway.
Powered chairs can apply drive force while their weight is still on the slope. That force must not push the ramp away from its support. Follow the ramp instructions for overlap and restraint, and ask who will inspect the contact before each use. Where permanent building work is proposed, clarify ownership, permission and professional installation requirements in advance.
The lower entry and upper exit deserve separate checks. Small castors can stop at an abrupt lip, while low footplates, battery boxes or anti-tip bars may catch as the chair changes angle. Compare published transition details with the actual chair and, where possible, arrange a controlled demonstration using the intended combination.
Do not solve a catching risk by approaching faster. A steady, straight movement leaves more time to stop if alignment changes. Check that the controller can be operated comfortably throughout and that the user's hand will not strike a wall or door frame. Any point that requires momentum or a last-second turn should be treated as a design problem.
Portable does not necessarily mean easy to handle. Record the ramp's weight, folded dimensions, hinge arrangement and safe lifting points. The person expected to deploy it should be able to lift, carry and place it without twisting or trapping fingers. If two people are required, that has to be realistic for every planned journey, not only an initial trial.
Choose a dry storage position where the ramp cannot fall, obstruct an exit or become a trip hazard. In a vehicle, secure it against movement during travel and keep it separate from the occupied wheelchair area unless the vehicle arrangement specifically provides safe restraint. Check that mud or rainwater can be cleaned without bringing contamination through the home.
Outdoor performance depends on more than a textured deck. Rain, frost, leaves, grit and mud can affect both the ramp and the chair's tyres. Inspect drainage at the lower end and avoid placing a foot on soft ground that may settle under load. Establish who will decide that conditions are unsuitable and what alternative access will be used.
Clean the deck using the method in the supplied instructions and examine it after severe weather or accidental impact. Do not add carpet, tape or homemade coatings unless the manufacturer approves them, as these can change grip, drainage or folding. A sheltered ramp can still become slippery when wet wheels transfer water onto it.
A first trial should take place without time pressure and with competent assistance available. Use the chair settings recommended for controlled low-speed movement and follow the wheelchair and ramp instructions. Practise lining up, pausing before entry, travelling straight and clearing the upper transition. The user must remain in control and should stop if the chair pulls to one side.
Agree simple communication between the user and helper before starting. A helper should not stand where the chair could roll towards them, and should not grab removable armrests or controls. If a safe trial cannot be arranged with the intended user and equipment, seek an assessment rather than relying on a demonstration involving a different chair.
Before use, look for movement at joints, bent edges, loose fixings, damaged feet, contamination and unusual flex. Confirm that every section is fully opened or locked as instructed. Keep a written note of damage and remove the ramp from use until the supplier or another qualified person confirms the correct remedy.
Follow the maker's schedule for cleaning, inspection and replacement parts. Avoid drilling, shortening or repairing the ramp without written approval. Keep the model details and instructions with the access plan so that helpers can identify the correct setup. A familiar route still deserves a brief check because ground, doors and stored items can change between journeys.
