A narrow electric wheelchair needs to fit both the person and the route. Its smallest advertised width is only a starting point: the fitted seat, controls, wheel arrangement and approach to a doorway all affect the result. The useful comparison is between complete configurations that retain the required seating and can negotiate the actual spaces. A width smaller than the opening does not show that the chair can line up for it.

Which width is being quoted?

Seat width, base width and overall width describe different things. Seat width concerns the seating space; base width describes the running platform; overall width should identify the outermost points of the specified chair. None can automatically substitute for another when comparing doorway access. A narrow base can still carry seating or controls that extend beyond it.

For a documented example, Sunrise Medical lists the QUICKIE Q50 R Carbon with a 570 mm overall width and a 440 mm seat width. Those figures answer different questions, rather than representing two possible widths for the same doorway calculation. Keep the measurement label beside the number when comparing brochures. A drawing that identifies the measured endpoints is particularly useful when one manufacturer quotes a base and another quotes a complete chair.

Keep the seating requirement intact

The required seating configuration is a constraint, not an allowance to trim until the frame fits. Seat width alone does not describe the usable space once the specified cushion, back support, side supports and arm arrangement are included. Establish those requirements through the person's seating assessment before treating a narrow configuration as a candidate.

A smaller nominal seat is not an access solution when it removes space or support the person needs. Equally, selecting a wider seat merely because it is available does not establish a better fit. The purchasing question is whether an appropriate configuration and a workable access arrangement can coexist. Where they cannot, examine another chair design or an appropriately assessed change to the environment. Do not turn a doorway measurement into an instruction to change someone's sitting position.

Find the widest part of the chosen configuration

The outermost point may be a wheel, arm support, control mounting or fitted accessory. Compare the chair as ordered, with the equipment needed in everyday use, rather than an advertised minimum dimension. Identify any part that changes position between driving, table use and transfers; its position must be meaningful for the task being measured.

Wheel options can change the width even within one named model. Sunrise Medical lists the QUICKIE Q300 M Mini Sedeo Pro at 520 mm with 12-inch drive wheels and 570 mm with 14-inch drive wheels. This illustrates a configuration difference, not a recommendation to choose either wheel size. Seating and accessory options have compatibility boundaries, so the narrowest base figure does not establish the complete width of every possible fitted version.

Measure the opening the chair can actually use

Measure the clear passage with the door in the position available during normal use, not just the door leaf or the distance between decorative outer frames. A partly opened door, handle or other projection may intrude into that passage. Consider the heights occupied by the chair's widest equipment as well as the opening near the floor.

In a hypothetical example, a 650 mm clear opening and a 570 mm chair leave 80 mm in total. If the chair were perfectly centred and parallel to the sides, that would be 40 mm on each side, not 80 mm each. This arithmetic is not a recommended clearance allowance or evidence that the passage is usable. It simply prevents a common comparison error before the approach, control and movement are assessed.

Allow room to line up with the doorway

A straight approach and a turn immediately before an opening are different tasks. When a chair approaches at an angle, its length as well as its width affects the space it occupies across the entrance. Measuring only the opening misses the manoeuvre needed to reach a straight, usable position.

Describe the approach on both sides. A wall opposite the doorway may restrict alignment; a cabinet just inside may prevent the chair completing the turn. Include the space occupied by the open door itself and where the person opening it will stand. Two doors with identical clear widths can therefore produce different results. A useful comparison follows the whole movement from the corridor into the room, including any necessary reversal, rather than ending when the front wheels cross the threshold.

Treat turning space as a separate measurement

The narrowest powered chair is not automatically the one that turns in the least space. Turning involves the path swept by the entire configured chair, including foot supports and projections at the rear. A long, narrow shape and a shorter, wider shape can occupy different areas during a manoeuvre, even when both pass through the same straight opening.

Read the manufacturer's turning measurement with its definition. Radius and diameter are different quantities, while a quoted turning circle may not describe every real corner or multi-point manoeuvre. Do not compare differently labelled figures as though they were interchangeable. Use them to identify candidates, then examine the actual right-angle turn, return route and available reversing space. A circular space on a diagram does not reproduce a corridor with a door swinging into it.

Keep the controller usable in the tightest place

Clearance is only useful when the person can still operate the chair. The joystick position, hand position and approach to the control belong in the occupied comparison. Moving a controller inwards or swinging it away may change the outer width, but that does not establish that the resulting position is suitable for driving.

Control response also matters where small corrections are needed. Sunrise Medical's travel guidance describes model-specific programming of sensitivity, speed and acceleration; it does not provide a universal setting for confined spaces. During an appropriately supported demonstration, consider whether the person can approach, pause and correct their direction with the intended controls. Configuration or programming changes belong with the responsible provider. Reducing the measured width while making the control difficult to reach would exchange one access problem for another.

Include the space needed after parking

Entering a room is not the same as using it. A chair may reach a dining position but leave the controller trapped beside the table. Beside a bed, the parked chair may occupy the approach needed by a helper or transfer equipment. These are task-space questions rather than reasons to keep measuring the same doorway more precisely.

Consider where the chair will stop, which supports move for the agreed activity and how it will leave afterwards. Keep transfer arrangements tied to the person's assessed plan rather than inventing a technique to suit a tight room. Include ordinary changes such as dining chairs being occupied or a bedside cabinet being opened. The relevant space is the room during use, not an empty floor plan prepared solely for the demonstration.

Compare two complete access arrangements

Imagine two hypothetical candidates with appropriate seating. Chair A is narrower, but its length makes the turn beside a hall cupboard awkward. Chair B is slightly wider, yet its configured shape allows a more straightforward approach. Neither wins merely from those descriptions: the usable clearances, controller position and person's operation still need to be demonstrated.

Keep the comparison focused on the passages and activities that would exclude a candidate. A successful straight doorway crossing should not conceal an unresolved bedroom turn, and a compact base should not conceal missing supports. Prefer the configuration whose required seating and everyday movements work together, rather than buying a smaller number and hoping the rest of the arrangement will follow.
