Stair nosings are not automatically designed to carry a ramp across a flight. Ask where the upper connection, intermediate supports and lower feet are intended to bear. Protect loose coverings, decorative edges and flexible floor finishes from unintended loading. Modular systems may need purpose-made legs or platforms positioned independently of vulnerable treads. Never stack blocks on individual steps to create improvised support. Where the building fabric is uncertain, obtain permission and technical advice before attaching or loading anything.
The wheelchair needs enough level space to align before descent and to stop after ascent. Check the upper landing with the door fully open, including the area taken by the user and helper. At the bottom, allow a straight approach rather than an immediate turn beside a wall. A stair rail can reduce shoulder clearance even when the ramp deck appears wide enough. Record slopes across the landings as well. A small crossfall at the lower end can introduce sideways movement before the main climb begins.
List working width, wheelbase, ground clearance, occupied mass, castor diameter and anti-tip position. Include cushions, batteries, footplates, head supports and bags. Confirm whether powered use on a proposed slope is permitted and how a manual chair will be controlled. Never assume a person should transfer solely to make unsuitable access equipment workable. If a stair-climbing device is being considered, that requires its own assessment, training and compatibility check; it is not interchangeable with an ordinary ramp.
L-shaped and return staircases cannot be treated as one straight incline. A change of direction normally needs a level platform large enough for the wheelchair and manoeuvre, with suitable edge protection and support. Measure ceiling height, balustrades, door openings and the space below. Temporary modular equipment may provide a designed layout, but its footprint can be much larger than the stairs themselves. Keep the fire route and access for other occupants in view before deciding whether the space can host such a system.
Longer or elevated temporary routes can need guarding or handrails appropriate to the user, site and design. Wheel stops alone do not prevent a person from losing balance, and an existing stair rail may sit too far from the ramp surface. Ask the supplier what protective components form part of the complete arrangement. Check gaps at joints and platform edges. Do not remove a building handrail without permission, because other residents may depend on it. Any protection must remain secure throughout the intended temporary period.
An access route across stairs can affect how occupants leave during an emergency. Speak to the responsible person for the building and update the personal evacuation plan where one is required. The ramp should not prevent other people using a protected stair or trap the wheelchair at a locked door. Battery failure, smoke and power loss can change normal assumptions. Temporary equipment left deployed overnight needs the same consideration. Emergency planning is separate from the ordinary question of whether the user can cross during a calm daytime trial.
Check component weights, carrying handles, joiners and locking points before bringing sections onto the stairs. Assemble only as directed and keep people clear of the area. Tools, packaging and unused parts should not sit on treads or landings. Have a second person verify the final contacts and guards when the system requires it. Mark the sequence for dismantling so a heavy section is not released while unsupported. Store removed pieces together in a dry location where they do not block another circulation route.
Test the completed proposal with the actual chair, user and trained assistance specified by the assessment. Begin with brakes, controls and communication reviewed on level ground. Pause before the lower transition, after entering the main slope and on the upper landing. Repeat the return journey because visibility and force change downhill. Stop immediately for wheel drift, deck movement, contact noise or an unsafe reach. A single successful ascent does not prove repeated suitability if descent, fatigue or door management has not been observed.
Write down the approved chair, configuration, helpers, weather limits and hours of use. Name the person responsible for inspections after movement, cleaning or building work. Review the setup if the user's mobility, chair accessories, staircase, flooring or household arrangements change. The end date should trigger removal or a fresh decision, not quiet extension. If the temporary need becomes long term, seek a properly designed adaptation. Records help later reviewers understand which measurements and assumptions supported the original choice.
