A compatible threshold solution may be required, but it must not stop the main ramp sitting securely. Weather seals and door tracks should not be crushed by concentrated load.
Check ground clearance beneath footplates, anti-tip devices and powered-wheelchair battery housings as the wheels cross both changes of angle. A gradual main slope does not guarantee adequate breakover clearance at the top.
A portable ramp can suit occasional use or a property where permanent alteration is inappropriate. It needs safe storage and a repeatable method of deployment. A fixed or modular system can provide consistent alignment for frequent access, although its structure, foundations, landings, rails and permissions deserve competent design.
Frequency matters. A device that one helper can position for a monthly visit may become burdensome several times a day. Compare the weight of every section, folded dimensions, handles and locking sequence. The regular operator should trial the physical task before purchase.
Portable ramps commonly rely on a lip, hook or locating feature at the top. Confirm the exact surface specified for that component. A decorative sill, loose slab or flexible trim may not provide structural support. The ramp should remain seated as weight moves from the approach onto its surface and through the doorway.
Calculate the combined load carried by the ramp: wheelchair, occupant and anything that remains attached or carried. Compare this total with the stated capacity, noting whether a figure applies to a complete platform, one channel or a pair. Leave the arrangement within all stated limits.
Capacity is only one requirement. The running width, support, gradient, wheel layout and condition can make a high-rated ramp unsuitable. Powered wheelchairs may concentrate load differently from light transit chairs, while small castors can react sharply to joints and edges.
A broad platform supports all wheels on one surface and can simplify alignment. It tends to occupy more storage space and may be heavier. Twin channels can be easier to handle separately, but both must remain parallel and match the chair's wheel paths. Three-wheel mobility equipment or unusual anti-tip arrangements may not align with conventional channels.
Measure from the actual contact patches rather than the outer bodywork alone. Allow for the way front castors swivel during the approach. Tyres should not rub raised edges or run close enough to climb them after a small steering correction.
An outdoor ramp needs a running surface that provides appropriate traction in its intended conditions. Leaves, algae, frost, rain and grit can change grip quickly. Check how water drains and whether the lower end sits in a place where puddles form. Clear contamination using the permitted cleaning method before use.
Metal surfaces can become hot or slippery, and timber components require suitable maintenance. Read the exposure and storage guidance for the exact construction. Stop using a ramp with damaged tread, corrosion, cracks, loose fixings or distorted sections until it has been competently assessed.

Changes to a rented property, listed building, pavement edge or communal entrance may need consent. A ramp must not create an unmanaged obstruction across a shared path or emergency route. Discuss permanent proposals with the property owner and relevant authority before work begins.
Test the proposed arrangement with the actual wheelchair, prescribed cushion, occupant and regular helper where this can be done safely. Begin on level ground to understand the equipment, then assess the entrance under appropriate supervision. Observe ramp movement, wheel clearance, steering, helper posture and the door-opening sequence.
Stop if the frame grounds, castors catch, tyres approach an edge or anyone loses confident control. Try the return journey as well; exiting can present different sight lines and braking demands. Resolve every uncertain point before routine use.
Before deployment, inspect hinges, locks, channels, tread, support lips, straps and fixings. Check the paving and landing for movement. Keep the route illuminated and free from bins, mats, cables or vegetation. A ramp that was safe when installed can become unsuitable after settlement, wear or a change of wheelchair.
Only when its permitted gradient, capacity, support and landing requirements are all met. Total measured rise and available run determine the needed length.
