Modular systems can span larger changes with platforms and designed supports. Compare the formats against the measured steps, not storage convenience alone. Never combine unrelated boards or channels to create length. The selected structure must act as one approved system while loaded.
Some ramps are designed to bridge an opening from the lower ground to the top bearing, while others require supports at defined points. Follow the exact instructions. Stair treads or nosings should not become improvised props, because uneven contact can twist the deck or overload a section. Observe deflection during an authorised trial and stop after unusual movement or noise. Do not add blocks beneath a flexible area. Confirm that hinges and joins are fully open and locked. The manner in which the ramp spans the steps is a structural requirement, not an installation preference.

Add the user, wheelchair and carried equipment when checking the permitted load. Keep the normal cushion and supports in place. Channel edges must not touch tyres or force castors inward. A larger powered chair may need a different width and support arrangement from a light attendant chair even when both fit through the doorway. Steps beneath a ramp increase the consequence of a wheel leaving the surface or a pedestrian stepping beside it. Review upstands, handrails, guarding and gaps with a competent person. A low wheel edge and a handrail are not interchangeable protections. Ensure features do not snag foot supports or reduce necessary deck width. Keep hands away from walls and rails where clearance narrows during ascent. If a removable ramp occupies communal stairs, establish how other users are protected. The design must consider the drop and surrounding movement, not just grip on the travel line.
Confirm whether the user may propel, drive or must be assisted on the measured gradient. Follow both wheelchair and ramp instructions. Helpers need stable footing, suitable reach and a clear route, but should not rely on a forceful run-up. Communicate before moving and keep feet, clothing and bags controlled. Practise ascent and descent under appropriate supervision. If the helper must stand on a stair, lean across a rail or release a handle to open the door, revise the layout. A repeatable operating method should fit the space without improvised body positions.
Decide whether the ramp stays in place or is removed after each crossing. A temporary deck can prevent ambulant people using handrails or treads and may block an escape route. Define who deploys it, where it is stored and how others know the stairs are unavailable. Keep folded sections secure from children and avoid placing them in corridors. For permanent work, integrate adjacent pedestrian access into the design. The practical question is not only whether a wheelchair can cross the steps, but whether the entrance continues to function safely for everyone who relies on it.

Use only approved cleaning and surface treatments. Corrosion, damaged grip and settlement can develop gradually where components meet masonry. Removable equipment should be dried and stored as directed. Fixed supports need their foundations reviewed. A route that crosses steps may look unchanged from above while the bearing conditions beneath have altered, which is why environmental checks belong in the maintenance routine.
Keep the stair measurements, ramp identity, attachment method, load, wheelchair configuration and operator procedure together. Add a diagram showing correct component order and landing clearance. At acceptance, complete the planned journey in both directions and record any limitation. Review after a new chair, changed assistance, building work or movement at the steps. Ramps for wheelchairs over steps are dependable only when geometry, span, edges and operation remain controlled. The record should make each assumption visible so a later change prompts reassessment rather than an unnoticed reduction in safety.
