Distinguish the main ramp formats

A familiar shape is not automatically suitable; support, attachment, edge treatment, storage and operator effort all depend on the exact arrangement.

Match the occupied mobility device

Use the combined mass of the user, wheelchair and routinely carried equipment when checking stated limits. Measure the real tyre track, widest point, wheelbase and lowest components. Footplates, anti-tip bars, power modules and reclining supports can contact a transition even when all tyres fit the deck. Paired channels must support the full wheel arrangement without forcing steering corrections. Keep prescribed seating and accessories fitted during a representative trial. A numerical capacity confirms only one part of compatibility; wheel loading, usable width, clearance and the maker's approved use are equally necessary.

Design safe approaches and landings

The wheelchair needs sufficient level area to line up before ascent and come fully clear at the top. A user should not be required to turn while one axle remains on the gradient. Door leaves, doormats and furniture can reduce the apparent landing. Helpers need secure footing and access to the chair without standing near an exposed edge. Preserve public paths and household escape routes. Where the ramp changes direction, assess the platform as a manoeuvring space rather than a simple connector. Draw door swings and wheel positions on the plan so conflicts become visible before equipment is placed.

Secure the ramp as instructed

The upper bearing point must be sound, correctly sized and compatible with the specified hook, overlap, pin or fixing. Loose slabs, rounded sills and compressible coverings can prevent full contact. Address edges, rails and guarding

Plan operation with the actual people

Identify who positions the ramp, who controls the wheelchair and who removes or stores equipment. Check the deck, hinges, feet, fasteners, rails and attachment points at intervals suited to the equipment and use. Look for corrosion, distortion, worn grip, settlement and new gaps at transitions. Keep the approaches clear and lighting effective. Structural damage should be assessed through the authorised support route rather than patched informally. Record the model, configuration and service contact. Fixed installations need their surrounding paving and drainage inspected too. Maintenance is not confined to the metal surface; any change in the supports or environment can alter alignment and control.

Use an acceptance checklist

At handover, confirm dimensions, model identity, permitted load, component order and correct placement. Complete a supervised crossing with the configured wheelchair and regular operator, observing approach, transitions, steering and clearance. Repeat the return direction because descent can reveal different issues. Record unresolved points and keep the route out of routine use until essential failures are corrected. Store instructions where helpers can reach them. Acceptance should show that the finished arrangement delivers the planned journey under defined conditions, not simply that the ramp fits between two levels.

Review access when circumstances change

Reassess after a new wheelchair, altered seating, reduced strength, different helper, changed doorway or movement in the ground. Temporary equipment may need replacement if use becomes frequent, while fixed work may require adaptation as the user's needs evolve. Record near misses and patterns of difficulty even when no injury occurs. Wheelchair access ramps remain suitable only while route, equipment and operation continue to align. A concise review record makes hidden assumptions visible and supports a timely move to another solution when the original arrangement no longer provides reliable access.
