The upper plate should sit fully on the sound surface specified in the instructions. A shallow contact on a rounded nosing can slide, while a thick weather bar can stop the plate lying flat. At the lower end, inspect whether the transition is smooth enough for the smallest castors and whether the approach lets the chair line up straight. Do not bridge a loose board, soft soil or a drain cover that is not designed for the load. Both ends should remain visible during setup so the person positioning the ramp can confirm contact before use.
Place the folded ramp on stable ground and follow its setup sequence. Keep hands away from hinge pinch points and confirm that transport catches are released without forcing them. Multi-fold designs may use braces, locks or locating pins that must reach a positive position. Do not let the wheelchair approach while a section is still being aligned. Look along the surface for twisting, raised joints or an uneven centre seam. Portable metal decks may use ribs, mesh, perforations or bonded grip. Compare these surfaces for the actual environment, including wet tyres carried in from outside. Check whether hinge lines or labels become slippery and how water drains when the deck is inclined. Clean only by the approved method and let it dry before folding for storage. Loose tape, carpet or rubber sheeting can bunch at transitions and interfere with the closing mechanism. If frost, mud or heavy rain makes conditions uncertain, delay use and provide an alternative rather than relying on a helper's strength.
A portable ramp can occupy the space needed to open a door. Map the sequence for unlocking, holding the leaf, positioning the deck and moving the wheelchair onto a level landing. An outward-opening door may require the ramp to be placed only after it is secured open, while an inward-opening door can still reduce turning room inside. Nobody should balance an occupied chair on the incline while reaching for a lock. If the routine requires several people, name their roles. Rehearse without rushing and keep bystanders away from the moving door and ramp.
The wheelchair user should direct the process where possible and consent to the planned support. Agree clear stop words and positions before movement starts. Helpers need to know the chair's controls and brakes and should avoid gripping removable armrests or foot supports. Advice differs for manual and powered wheelchairs, and the chair maker may restrict slopes or methods. Temporary equipment still needs control when it is left near an entrance. Fold and latch it before carrying, then store it where children cannot play on it and moisture will not remain trapped. In a vehicle, restrain it against braking and collision loads; a heavy folded ramp can become a dangerous projectile. Do not lean it loosely behind a door or block a corridor. Before each deployment, check the upper lip, lower transition, deck, raised edges, hinges, locks, handles and fasteners. Look for cracks, distortion, sharp burrs, missing parts and contamination. A carrying handle is not evidence that the load-bearing joints remain sound. Compare any play with the supplier's guidance and stop using the ramp after impact or an uncontrolled drop until it is assessed. Periodic inspection should include the underside, which may hide loose rivets or corrosion. Keep a short record when equipment is shared across a care team.
Two suitcase ramps should not be overlapped, placed end to end or supported on makeshift blocks unless an engineered system expressly permits that exact arrangement. Joints can separate, create a castor trap or concentrate load on an unsupported edge. The same caution applies to using a suitcase ramp as one side of a paired channel system. If the obstacle needs more run than one approved unit provides, seek a longer purpose-designed route or professional layout. Convenience and available storage do not justify creating a configuration that has no stated capacity or locating method.
Request usable width, ramp mass, folded dimensions, maximum rise or slope conditions, permitted load and minimum upper bearing. Ask how each hinge locks, whether edge protection is integral and which environments are allowed. Clarify the warranty and replacement route for latches, handles and grip surfaces. If the ramp is promoted for travel, confirm how it should be restrained and whether one person is expected to lift it. Written answers make competing suitcase ramps easier to compare and expose when an attractive compact package omits details central to safe use.
Clear both landings, inspect the ramp, open it in the correct order and check every bearing point and lock. Confirm the door is controlled, lighting is adequate and communication roles are understood. Keep the chair on level ground until setup is complete. After crossing, remove the ramp only when nobody depends on it for an immediate return route, then clean, dry, fold, latch and store it. This deliberate sequence may take longer than dropping a deck over a step, but it preserves the main benefit of suitcase equipment: repeatable portable access without treating each use as an experiment.
