Start with the SUV you actually use

A wheelchair SUV ramp has to suit one vehicle, one chair and one loading routine. Begin at the driveway or parking bay and trace the route into the exact rear hatch or side door. Measure the opening and the threshold

Open the vehicle in its normal loading configuration and measure the narrowest aperture, the sill height, the depth to the first obstruction and the headroom above the approach. Include hinges, seals, trim, parcel shelf supports and the folded seat backs. Measure outside as well, because a ramp needs room to unfold without crossing a kerb or leaving the handler in the traffic lane. Keep each figure beside a sketch showing where its ends were measured.

Record the chair in transport form

Measure the wheelchair's overall width, length, height, wheelbase and lowest projection when it is prepared for the SUV. Include battery, cushion, foot supports, headrest, tray, controller and bags. Compare rear and side approaches

The rear hatch may offer a straight line but need a long clear run and a safe place to stand. A side door can work better in a narrow bay, yet the wheel arch, sliding mechanism or passenger seat can reduce the usable route. Draw both approaches where the SUV allows them. Include door swing, nearby vehicles, pavement edge and the final position of the chair. Pick the route that leaves the operator visible and able to stop without stepping behind the vehicle.

Choose tracks or a broad deck

Twin tracks can be easier to carry and store, but each wheel must stay aligned and the spacing must match the chair. A continuous deck gives castors and rear wheels one surface, though it can take more boot space and may be heavier. Compare clear width, edge protection, surface grip, flex, folded thickness and carrying points. Place a candidate beside the SUV and chair before deciding from a catalogue description. A narrow top transition can defeat an otherwise suitable ramp.

Relate ramp length to the SUV rise

Measure from the firm ground where the lower feet will sit to the actual loading surface. Then measure the run available behind or beside the SUV, allowing for the hatch and the handler's stance. Check the chair maker's guidance and the ramp maker's stated application for the loaded equipment. A short ramp may produce a demanding incline, while a long one can obstruct a public route. The usable calculation must include the top transition and the lower ground condition.

Check how the upper end bears

Find out whether the ramp's lip, hook, bracket or plate is meant to rest on the sill, bumper or a supplied support. The vehicle's trim must not be asked to carry a load for which it was not designed. Check that the hatch cannot press on the ramp and that the contact remains stable as the chair reaches the top. Fit mats, straps or pins exactly as instructed. Loose timber, a loose mat or a convenient luggage edge is not a reliable substitute.

Plan the SUV's interior clearance

Once the front wheels reach the top, a chair may need to turn, reverse or pass between folded seats. Measure the width between wheel arches, the height under the hatch and the space needed for the chair's longest part. Remove only items that the vehicle and chair instructions permit. Protect the controller, headrest and cushion from contact. Mark where the chair will finish so the handler does not push it against a seat, window or door while trying to close the hatch.

Give the operator a clear view

During a trial, the person steering should see both wheels, the ramp edges and the landing. Practise controls, stopping and reversing on level private ground first. Learn the chair's parking brake, power-off and free-wheel instructions before approaching the incline. A helper may be needed to guide the ramp or call a stop, but nobody should stand between a moving chair and the SUV. Stop at sideways drift, loss of grip, an unexpected scrape or a shifting support.

Sort the restraint and loose parts

After loading an unoccupied chair, use the vehicle points or installed system specified for securing it. Keep the ramp itself restrained so it cannot become a moving object during braking. Store batteries, footrests, baskets, cushions and detachable controls where they cannot strike a passenger. Do not confuse a strap around a frame with an occupied wheelchair tie-down and passenger-restraint system. Before shutting the hatch, check that every loose item has a planned place and that the chair's controls are protected.

Make carrying part of the decision

A ramp that is light on paper may still be awkward from a garage shelf to the SUV. Compare packed length, width, thickness, handle position and the mass of each section. Rehearse taking it out, unfolding it, placing both ends and putting it away again. Include the chair's preparation and the final restraint, because several moderate movements can become tiring. If the regular handler cannot keep a secure grip or clear line of sight, change the arrangement rather than relying on enthusiasm.

Choose a dependable parking place

Find a firm, level position with enough length for the ramp and enough width for the handler to walk safely. A cambered road, loose gravel, wet leaves, mud, standing water or a busy car park changes the task. Consider the hatch height in rain and the need to keep a pedestrian route open. Identify a second location for poor conditions. Warning lights and an assistant cannot make a ramp stable when its feet have no reliable bearing.

Inspect the ramp and vehicle contact

Before each planned journey, look over the walking surface, rails, hinges, locks, feet, end lips, straps and brackets. Stop for a crack, bend, loose fastener, missing cap or new movement. Check the SUV sill and bumper for damage as well. If the ramp has come from another vehicle, obtain its model details and original fitting instructions rather than assuming the same contact is sound. A modified or damaged arrangement needs competent assessment before it is used again.

Rehearse the complete journey

Run the sequence in daylight with the SUV secured: park, open the doors, prepare the chair, deploy the ramp, load or unload, secure the equipment and restore the vehicle. Let the regular helper perform the task while another person observes, then discuss every pause. Repeat the return direction because unloading can require different braking and body position. Record where a second helper is required. The arrangement is ready only when the whole routine is calm, repeatable and within the stated guidance.

Does an SUV always need a longer ramp?

No. Measure the actual floor rise and available run, then compare the resulting approach with the equipment and vehicle guidance.
