A straight pass through a doorway does not prove that the approach works. Check the space needed to align beforehand and turn beyond it. Position the chair where transfers actually occur and follow the person’s assessed method. Check parking brakes, footrest movement, arm-support removal and the approach of any board, hoist or standing aid. Leave space for the helper’s feet and body. Simply reaching the bedside does not establish that the transfer can be completed.
Place detached parts where they remain visible and cannot trip anyone. Never stand on footplates or use unapproved frame parts as lifting handles. If the user must twist, reach excessively or rely on furniture for support, request appropriate review instead of treating repetition as evidence that the method is acceptable.
Parking-brake levers should be reachable by the intended operator without trapping fingers against wheels or side guards. Confirm how they are applied and adjusted. They should hold as described on a suitable level surface but are not a substitute for propulsion control or an attendant’s safe handling on a gradient.
If attendant brakes are supplied, learn whether they slow, park or perform both functions. Test their action under suitable supervision. Cable routing must stay clear during folding and transfers. Report a brake that feels uneven, drags or fails to hold rather than assuming a new component will improve through use.
Ask for a demonstration and have the regular handler repeat the sequence. Identify removable cushions, foot supports or other components, along with pinch points and approved hand positions. A mechanism used several times daily must be manageable in the available space without leaning across an unstable frame.
Measure the secured folded shape and note whether it stands independently. Confirm how the chair is reopened and checked before sitting. Do not force the sides together, tie the frame with an improvised strap or lift it through arm pads. Follow the instructions for every latch and moving joint.
Measure the cupboard, alcove or vehicle area as it will actually be used. Include door swing, shelves, pipes and room for the handler to position the folded chair. Store removable parts together and protect the cushion. The location should be dry, accessible and consistent with the manufacturer’s environmental guidance.
A folding wheelchair must not block an exit, stairway or frequently used doorway. Daily retrieval should not require moving heavy boxes first. If the chair is stored open for convenience, check that brakes are set appropriately and nobody must squeeze between the wheels and nearby furniture.
If the chair goes into a car, obtain its complete mass, folded dimensions and the weight of the largest section after any approved disassembly. Measure the tightest boot opening and loading height. The regular handler should assess the movement with suitable technique and the permitted grip points.
Secure the wheelchair, cushion and detached components against movement during a journey. Folding and boot fit do not show that a chair is approved for occupied road transport. If the user remains seated in a vehicle, obtain specialist advice about a compatible accessible-vehicle, securement and passenger-restraint arrangement.
Free delivery can depend on product, postcode and service level. Ask whether the chair arrives boxed at the threshold, is taken to a chosen room or includes assembly and demonstration. Confirm lead time, packaging removal and any access restrictions. Delivery should not be confused with a clinical fitting or transfer assessment.

Write observations from the actual trial beside each item. Leave unanswered questions open until the supplier or relevant adviser provides dependable information.
Reject a chair that fails an essential fit, transfer or access task. For those that pass, compare folding effort, support and complete cost. A well-chosen indoor folding wheelchair should feel like part of the home routine when open and become genuinely manageable when stored, giving the user practical access without sacrificing personal fit for a smaller folded outline.
