There is no single measurement that suits every wheelchair, ramp design and doorway. The useful width comes from measuring the actual chair, understanding which parts project, and checking how the ramp's manufacturer defines its usable surface.
Width must also be considered with the approach, edge protection, turning space and helper position. A deck that is wider than the chair may still be awkward if the doorway forces an angled entry or a hand rim passes close to a wall. Record the complete route and seek qualified advice where the installation, user needs or regulations require it.
Measure the chair in the setup used on the ramp, with the user seated and normal accessories fitted. Check drive wheels, hand rims, hubs, arm supports, controls, footplates and bags. The widest point may sit low or high, so note where it occurs as well as its dimension. Do not substitute seat width for overall occupied width.
If more than one chair or scooter will use the route, measure each separately and design around the relevant largest requirement. Record units clearly and repeat uncertain measurements. A chair's published overall width can help as a cross-check, but physical measurement captures accessories and adjustments that may not appear in a standard specification.
Product descriptions may quote the complete structure, the running surface or a packaged dimension. Ask for the unobstructed width available to the wheels and hands. Raised kerbs, hinges, handles, channels and central joints can reduce or divide that space. Use a drawing for the exact model and length where possible.
With paired channel ramps, width means more than adding the two tracks. Confirm each channel's running width, the permitted spacing between them and the way they are secured. Front and rear wheels may follow different lines. Channel ramps are unsuitable if any wheel cannot remain fully supported during the complete climb and descent.
A user cannot be expected to hold a mathematically perfect line. Powered controls, uneven tyre pressure, slope camber and small approach errors can move the chair sideways. Provide clearance that supports controlled travel without allowing a wheel or hand to meet an edge. The appropriate allowance depends on the chair, the person and the ramp arrangement.
More width is not automatically better if it creates a ramp too heavy to position or too wide for its support. Compare realistic alternatives as complete systems. Where the margin is tight, arrange an assessment or controlled trial rather than deciding from arithmetic alone. Never plan for tyres to brush kerbs as a normal steering guide.
For a self-propelled chair, hands move around the push rims and may extend beyond their measured outside edge. Walls, rails and door furniture can create injury points even when the tyres fit. Observe the user's propulsion movement on level ground and include space for fingers and elbows throughout the sloping section.
On powered chairs, note the joystick side and the user's arm position. A projecting control can strike a wall or rail before the wheel reaches the ramp edge. Attendants need room at push handles without walking against a fence or doorway. Measure these body and control envelopes during a normal movement, not with arms deliberately tucked in.
A narrow doorway immediately before a ramp may force the chair to enter off-centre. Measure the clear opening with the door fully held in its normal usable position, including handles and closers. At the lower end, provide enough level space to align the chair straight. At the top, the whole chair should clear the slope before turning.
Repeat the route in reverse because the wheel path and view change. A user descending backwards under an approved method may require different assistance and alignment; do not assume this is suitable without guidance. If a landing cannot accommodate the necessary turn, increasing ramp width alone will not correct the layout.
Raised edges can help prevent wheels leaving the deck, but their dimensions reduce available running space and may conflict with low footplates. Handrails can support some pedestrians while narrowing hand or elbow clearance for chair users. Confirm which features are included in the quoted width and whether their positions suit every expected user.
Do not remove edges or rails to gain width unless the manufacturer and responsible professional approve the altered arrangement. Where a permanent installation is planned, relevant building and access requirements may shape the design. Obtain advice based on the specific property, rise and users rather than relying on a general online width rule.
The ramp may need a wider bearing area than its running surface suggests. Check where the top lip rests, how much overlap is required and whether the threshold is strong and level. A wide deck balanced on a narrow or curved support is not made suitable by generous wheel clearance.
Look for door stops, tracks, weather seals and protruding masonry that reduce width at a critical height. At the lower end, confirm that both sides stand on firm ground. If the ramp twists because one foot is unsupported, the effective width and edge clearance can change as the chair moves.
Castors do not always follow the same track as large wheels, particularly during an angled approach or turn. Anti-tip wheels and powered-chair drive wheels may also sit at different widths. Mark wheel positions on a scaled sketch, then verify them in a supervised trial using the actual chair if the supplier supports one.
Long wheelbases need a straight approach for longer than expected. Mobility scooters may have three- or four-wheel layouts unlike a wheelchair. If the route will serve mixed equipment, state that in the design brief. A ramp selected around one rear-wheel measurement cannot be assumed to accommodate every mobility device.
A trial should use the intended ramp, chair configuration and support method on a controlled site. Follow the maker's instructions and have competent assistance available. Move slowly, checking alignment at entry, mid-slope and exit. Stop if a wheel approaches an edge, a control catches or the ramp shifts.
Do not make a narrow ramp seem workable by removing approved chair parts, increasing speed or relying on someone to push sideways. Record what occurred and change the design if normal travel cannot remain controlled. Clear images and measurements can help a supplier understand the issue, provided they do not replace an assessment where one is needed.
Store the chair dimensions, ramp drawing, doorway measurements and approved setup together. Recheck them after changing tyres, controls, cushions, footrests or the chair itself. Building alterations, new flooring and replacement doors can also narrow or redirect the route. A previously adequate ramp should not be assumed to fit changed equipment.
Before each use, confirm that stored items, parked vehicles or mats have not reduced the approach. Inspect edges and hinges for damage that intrudes onto the deck. Clear documentation helps family members, carers and maintenance staff preserve the usable width that the original assessment required.
