Length must also fit the actual parking space without extending into a road, footpath or the path of another car.
Think about the point where the front wheels cross into the vehicle. A sudden breakover can catch parts beneath the chair or require a sharp steering movement. A controlled empty trial, where appropriate, may reveal a clearance issue. Never force the chair over an obstruction or remove parts from it merely to make the ramp fit.
The upper end must rest on a sound area in the way specified by the maker. It may need a stated overlap, locating edge or fixing point. Loose trim, a movable boot liner or a narrow metal lip may not offer the support required. At ground level, avoid loose gravel, drains, mud and steep cambers.
Before loading, clear water, leaves and stones. Set the ramp fully, confirm locks or hinges are engaged, and make the recommended stability check. Blocks, bricks, folded mats and timber offcuts are not a safe way to alter the angle or support an uneven end.
Car access ramps should be manageable before, during and after the journey. Examine folded weight, grip positions, catches and the route from storage to the vehicle. A demonstration using the real car and chair is valuable because it exposes small conflicts between dimensions. Take the normal luggage as well as the chair. The best solution is usually the one that remains calm to use after a tiring appointment or a wet return journey, not the one with the shortest demonstration time.
