Measure to fixed boundaries rather than assuming bins, planters or parked cars will always move. Leave space at the bottom for a straight approach and stopping. Longer equipment may reduce gradient but can extend into a footway, shared route or drainage channel. The surrounding land use can rule out an otherwise plausible layout.

Where a straight run does not fit, a platform and change of direction may be considered through professional design. Portable ramps should not be joined or balanced on makeshift blocks to create extra reach. If the site cannot support a safe ramp, investigate other access alterations or lifting equipment with qualified advice.

Verify width and edge clearance

Measure the occupied wheelchair at hand rims, hubs, controls and accessories. Ask whether the ramp width is the outside structure or the clear deck between upstands. Provide realistic steering room without allowing hands or elbows to strike walls or rails. Multiple users or future chair changes may alter the required envelope.

Edge protection and handrails can be important but take space and need correct heights and terminations. They must not snag footplates or clothing. Do not remove specified elements to gain a few centimetres. Permanent-ramp dimensions and guarding should be checked against current requirements for the exact property.

Design sound support and drainage

The ramp must bear on firm, durable surfaces at all required points. Loose slabs, decayed timber and decorative door trim are not automatically suitable. Identify underground services before excavation or fixing. A competent installer should explain foundations, anchorage and how movement between the building and path is managed.

Rainwater should not pool on the ramp, landing or inside the threshold. Preserve air bricks and damp protection. Check where leaves, snow and grit collect. Adding a canopy may affect permissions and drainage, so treat it as part of the entrance design rather than a separate accessory.

Plan daily door security

The user needs to reach locks, bells and entry controls from a stable position without stretching. Check lighting and visibility after dark. If a helper normally opens the door, ensure they can stand clear of the wheelchair's path and do not have to hold the chair on the slope.

Consider emergency exit as well as entry. The ramp and any gate must not create an obstruction for other occupants. Key safes, powered doors and access-control changes require appropriate installation and agreed management. A route is not independent if the user remains stranded outside whenever one helper is absent.

Choose between portable and permanent options

A portable ramp can preserve the entrance when used occasionally, but somebody must carry, position and inspect it every time. Record its mass, folded dimensions and storage place. Leaving it deployed may be outside its intended use or create an obstruction, while repeated lifting can be unrealistic for the household.

A permanent installation offers consistency but involves structure, permissions, appearance and maintenance. Modular systems may allow later adjustment. Compare complete responsibilities, not just initial price. If the property is rented, obtain written agreement before alteration and clarify who removes or maintains the equipment later.

Trial and hand over the finished route

Before routine use, inspect the complete installation and compare it with the agreed design. Conduct a controlled trial with the actual chair and trained help. Move slowly in both directions, testing door operation and landings. Stop if wheels approach an edge, the ramp shifts or the user cannot maintain control.
