Measure the car in its usual state

Record the narrowest boot or side-door opening, sill height, floor depth and space beside the car. Leave the seats, parcel shelf, luggage and hoist in their normal positions while measuring. Note hinges, trim and the places where the tiller, basket or mirrors could catch. Include the ground-to-sill rise and the room needed to deploy the whole ramp, not just the space inside the boot.

Describe the scooter as it travels

Write down the length, width, height, wheelbase, ground clearance and complete mass of the scooter with the seat, tiller, basket and battery fitted. If the manufacturer permits dismantling, list each part's weight and approved lifting point. Measure the widest projection. The ramp's clear surface must suit the wheels and approach, rather than a smaller deck measurement.

Follow the machine's own method

Read whether the scooter should be driven, folded or divided into sections before selecting a ramp. Learn the power switch, parking brake and any permitted free-wheel setting. Practise stopping on level ground. When parts are removed, lift from the stated handles rather than the tiller, basket or control pod. A low-mass ramp is useful only when the full routine remains within the helper's strength and reach.

Assess rails, tracks and platforms

Twin rails create two defined wheel tracks and may pack neatly, but their spacing must suit the scooter. A platform supplies a continuous surface and may take more boot space. Folding and telescopic designs differ in latches, end lips, thickness and carrying points. Place the candidate ramp beside the car and open it before drawing conclusions from its label. The regular helper should be able to deploy and recover it without leaning over the scooter.

Calculate the approach from the ground

Note the tarmac-to-sill height and the unobstructed run available for the ramp. Compare those figures with the manufacturer's guidance for the loaded scooter. A steep approach can make steering and stopping harder, while a longer section may occupy a pavement or parking space. Ask where the scooter is halted at the top and which way the helper walks. Do not approve a route by testing an empty ramp alone.

Examine how the ramp meets the car

Confirm whether the upper end rests on the sill, bumper, floor edge or a dedicated support. Use any lip, strap, mat or bracket as directed. Check the empty ramp for movement and make sure the hatch cannot bear down on it. Do not bridge a gap with loose timber or a weak trim panel. Tell the supplier about a lowered floor, tow-bar fitting or hoist before agreeing the loading method.

Keep steering calm and visible

The operator needs a clear view of the two wheels, tiller and upper landing. Practise on private, even ground with the vehicle secured. Maintain a controlled speed and stop if the scooter pulls sideways, a wheel leaves its track or a support moves. Use a second helper where the instructions require one. Nobody should stand where a moving scooter could trap them against the vehicle or a wall.

Prepare the transport position

After loading, switch off the scooter and use its stated parking or transport position. Secure it with approved vehicle restraints or the supplied storage system. A blanket or strap around a loose tiller is not a proper restraint. Put the seat, basket, battery or other removed pieces where they cannot move towards passengers or controls. Check the boot lid and other doors for contact before adding luggage.

Handle batteries and additions separately

Ask the scooter maker how the battery should be isolated, removed and carried in the car. Protect connectors and retain the correct instructions. A replacement battery, different seat, basket or ramp bag can alter the load and available room. Record where every part travels. Repeat the ramp and restraint checks after an accessory is fitted instead of assuming the familiar arrangement still applies.

Make carrying and storage achievable

Compare packed length, width, thickness and mass with the boot and the path from the house. Decide where the ramp will be kept so it does not block a doorway or escape route. Inspect handles, latches, feet and edges after each trip, and store the ramp as directed. If retrieving it is awkward, a helper may carry it one-handed or skip an inspection, so storage belongs in the choice.

Choose the parking position

Leave the whole deployment length behind or beside the car and preserve a stable walking line. Firm, even ground is preferable; mud, gravel, leaves, standing water, a cambered verge and moving traffic complicate control. A low awning or crowded bay may require a different place. Warning lights cannot make an obstructed or sloping position workable.

Inspect before repeated use

Examine the travelling surface, rails, platform, hinges, feet, lips, latches and straps. Stop for a crack, bent edge, loose joint, missing cap or new movement. Ask about the ramp's history if it has been used in another vehicle. A mark beside a support deserves attention even when the rest looks clean. Arrange competent inspection when a quick visual check cannot answer the question.

Run the real demonstration

Ask to see the exact scooter on the ramp beside a vehicle with comparable geometry. Test unpacking, contact, wheel guidance, steering, stopping, folding or dismantling, carrying, storage and restraint. Note every action that needs a second person. Repeat the method in daylight before a first appointment, then consider the weather normally encountered. Written instructions should settle uncertainties before travel relies on the ramp.

Choose another method when needed

A hoist may suit a complete scooter that cannot be managed on a ramp without excessive force, provided the car and mounting system are compatible. Compare hoist, dismantling and ramp loading with the helper's strength, reach and travel pattern. The lightest object is not automatically the easiest arrangement. Choose the method the person who actually loads the scooter can repeat calmly on an ordinary outing.

Include the handover in the rehearsal: who takes the ramp from storage, who opens the boot, where the scooter waits and where removed parts are kept out of the footwell. A dry run should cover the complete parking manoeuvre, including a safe place to turn around if the attempt has to stop. Ask the regular helper to demonstrate the sequence without coaching; their movement shows whether the handles, packed mass and clearances are realistic. If the route only works with a stronger helper or an empty car, arrange another plan before relying on it.

Does a low ramp mass make it suitable?

No. Check packed size, clear surface, scooter mass, wheel spacing, vehicle opening, approach, contact and the operator's capability.
